I need help with making a school list. PLEASE!!!

Non tranditional applicant. 4.0 science GPA. 3.9 cumulative gpa . No MCAT scores yet, will be taking on Aug 15th. URM. Registered Nurse. Countless hours of clinical experience and hrs. Volunteer as an RN at free health care clinic.

Thanks!

1. Which state/s are you a resident in?
2. What are you getting with practice MCATs?
3. Do you have any research experience?
4. Please list schools or areas of the country you are interested in.

1. NY, my mom has a home in PA so i can also probably become a resident there.

2. very bad, i am doing a kaplan course which started in January but not very happy with my scores right now. my diagnostic test score was a 17 🙁 I'm not really a fan of the course so i purchased the examkrackers books and like them way better because they are way easier to comprehend. in addition i haven't had much time to study because i work part time and i am also taking organic chem 2 this semester which ends in 2 weeks but i plan on studying hardcore when finals are over. i know i have what it takes to do well. i have roughly 3 months to study and plan on taking the summer off from work just to study.

3. just one summer of research experience in the emergency department during the summer of 2010 and i can't quite call it research because i don't feel like i did much, not to seem ungrateful but the experience was a waste of time if you ask me. before i got the position, they advertised it as being more hands on and actually doing research but when it started i realized it was far from that. we just walked around the er and handed out customer service surveys to patients. the people above us did a research study on the surveys -_- i was highly dissapointed and felt mislead 🙁

4. i am mainly interested in in state NY schools. but willing to go anywhere that accepts me, i see myself applying to 30 schools on the east coast.

Thanks for helping!!!!

@Rik1111 oh and also i wanted to mentioned that I can not wait till the next cycle to apply! i graduated undergrad 2 years ago and i do not want to wait and extend my gap year any longer! i have a strong passion for medicine and feel like i have worked and pushed myself just to get in for next yr. so i do not want this to be an option.

1. PA determines residency for admission purpose by looking at your permanent address on AMCAS application. Not sure how NY does it, but if it's same as PA, then you can only pick either or. I would go with NY since PA residency boost doesn't really exist.

2. Kaplan diagnostic is harder than it should be. That's how they can claim to guarantee improved scores.

3. URM and 4.0 alone are so rare... (You are talking about your UG GPA, not some post-bac/masters GPA right?) You will have an above average chance even with an MCAT of 21. (Source: https://www.aamc.org/download/321520/data/2012factstable25-5.pdf) And you also have worked as a nurse so that's a plus as long as you can explain why you are switching.

30+ MCAT and you can put pretty much put any med schools in the country on your map.

@chenzt Thanks! well i started taking my pre reqs for med school in the later half of my 2nd yr of nursing school when i realized that i had a stronger passion for medicine than nursing although i think nursing is a great profession! anyway after i graduated i still wasn't finished with my pre reqs such as physics and orgo so i took returned after i graduated. i didn't get to finish them in time because of the amount of time nursing classes took in my schedule. so i was forced to spend way longer finishing the pre reqs. i wasn't able to enroll in a post bac program because i began working as a nurse full time after i graduated and could only go to school part time to finish physics and orgo. also i wanted to get some experience working as an RN.

and i am still not done!!! i have to to take biochem and genetics or cell bio this fall so i have a shot at applying to stony brook since they changed their course requirements for admission. (now they require a course in cell bio or genetics for admission)

the main thing i am worried about is my lack of research experience and getting involved in things such as publications which i really didn't have time to do with my schedule because of how time consuming my nursing degree was and the extra classes i was piling on top of that for pre med.

Given a good MCAT score, choose the schools where you fit in best. Location, research opportunities..., location! haha.

Not to discourage you or say that research isn't a positive, but your application doesn't need research to be competitive. If you nail the MCAT, you're practically accepted already.

Thanks guys. I hope all goes well with this cycle. especially with my mcat and the fact that i will be applying a little late. fingers crossed!!

Yea, cGPA includes everything you took in college and if that's 3.9, you are golden. Also regarding pre-reqs, you don't need to have the classes done when you apply, you just need to pass it by the time you matriculate.

@chenzt i see, thank you! and that link you put up was really helpful, i compared my stats to the chart and even with a not so great mcat i still have a higher chance than an ORM applicant. the stats on the chart are actually pretty surprising lol. another question i had was applying to 30 schools, do you think that it is a bit overkill? i know that the application process is expensive and i don't want to spend more money than i need to so do you think that i should decrease the number of schools i apply to or just leave it at 30.

Depends on your MCAT. But unless you really bomb it (we're talking about the scoring in the teens), yea, I think it's an overkill. 15-20 is more appropriate.

Be on guard guys... troll senses are starting to tingle...

@Mr Interesting huh? 😵 didn't mean to offend anyone or sorry if i did but i really didn't know how much being an URM really affected the app process. but thanks for your input anyway….

I would recommend getting the MSAR. Then use the LizzyM method with the schools you are interested in (MCAT + 10*GPA). Calculate this for yourself and the average for each school you are interested in. If your score and the scores of the school are in line, apply. Throw in a couple schools well below your average (especially because you are applying late) and a couple schools that you are really interested in, but your score is below their average (you can shoot high because of URM).

Make sure you apply early, even without your scores. Your app should be in sometime in July. This guarantees you will get secondaries as soon as your MCAT scores are released.

@trino so submit my app in July? i am taking mcat on aug 15 which means i will be getting my scores in sept, do you think schools will be annoyed that my app is in so early but without the mcat scores . i was thinking of submitting my primary 2 weeks prior to the mcat date which means by aug 1st, so by the time my app is verified my mcat score will be available too.

also how much time do schools give applicants to complete the secondary app. and what is the LizzyM method?

1. Most URM students have the common sense not to make stupid statements like that because they already know why the stats for accepted URM students are a bit lower than the stats of accepted ORM students. If they don’t, they take the time to learn why. They do not post statements that throw it in the face of ORM students followed by an "LOL" which will undoubtedly excite the masses and turn into an all out flame war.

2. The fact you posted this here (the wrong section for school list) instead of the “What are my chances” section or the “Underrepresented in Healthcare” section with no post history makes me a little suspicious. I have my troll meter turned all the way up because there is new trend of trolling on SDN. People who pretend to be URM then post comments that will piss off ORM students just to spark an all out hate war.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. With a GPA like yours, great MCAT, and a solid app you should be fine and may not need to apply to that many schools. I'd say 20 schools is fine just to play it safe. What have your MCAT practice scores been like since your diagnostic in Jan?

The verification process takes 6-8 weeks. July is peek season, so assume it will take 8 weeks. To get secondaries back immediately, I would submit by the second week in July. Schools will not even notice your application until they receive your scores in September. They get 7k+ applications every year. You won't annoy them because they won't take the time to look at it yet.

Its the general rule to get secondaries in ASAP but not to sacrifice quality. Schools actually give you a deadline, but if you are submitting around that deadline, you are LATE. I would get a secondary in AT LATEST 2 weeks after you receive it. Try to aim for a week though.

LizzyM is an adcom member who frequently posts on here. Her method gives you a numerical way to pick schools. It is an equation: (MCAT Score) + 10 x (cGPA) = LizzyM score. What you are going to do is this
1) Calculate this for yourself when you get your scores back. For example, if you make a 30 MCAT then your score is 30 + 10 x (4.0) = 70.
2) Calculate the LizzyM score for the schools you are interested in. Use the MSAR to find their average accepted MCAT and GPA and plug those scores in
3) Here's the subjective part. If your LizzyM score is relatively the same as the LizzyM for the school APPLY. Don't ask me what is "relatively the same." That is up to you and how many schools you want to apply to
4) Add some safety schools. These are schools who have a LizzyM score well below your score
5) Add some reach schools. These are schools that have a LizzyM well above your score and you are really interested in them. Since you are URM you can shoot for the moon here. High ranked schools are known for actively recruiting URMs
6) Apply, interview, and have fun!

@Mr Interesting i am new to this whole forum thing so i just posted without even knowing what section i was posting in. i have only taken one more kaplan test after my diagnostic and scored just as bad as the 1st because i have not been studying and school and work is taking over my life but once school ends i will have more time to commit to studying. i will also be leaving my job this summer. i plan to study 5 days a week 4-6 hrs a day. and take one practice test a week. closer to the test date i will take 2 a week if i can. i am actually constructing my study schedule for the summer this week. i will update you on what my practice scores are looking like when the time comes.

thanks @trino this was very helpful! i will follow this guide. did you get into med school yet or are you applying?

Haha, sorry I had to.
Lol, no worries. I know you are joking but we both know there are people on this site who will say worse.

Sounds like a plan. Take some time to venture off to the MCAT section for tips and study schedules. Also, take sometime to explore the Underrepresented in healthcare section. That section is fully of high performing and achieving minority students who can definitely provide you with excellent advice on how to approach the app cycle. They also have great insight on a variety of schools from a minority perspective which can help you pick the right schools. I know you are new but be cautious about things you say. Yes, the current system in admissions can help disadvantage minority students get into medical a bit easier than ORM students but be considerate of others who may not have an easy time. Good luck on the MCAT though, hope you come back to update us that you killed it.

I applied last year and will be attending in the fall. My mdapps are under my avatar to the left. Feel free to PM me with any questions. Despite my avatar I am not URM. I'm ORM in every way imaginable

Not doing so well on practice exams, verbal is kicking my butt. exam is 2 weeks away...

Well do a search in the MCAT forum for some verbal strategies. some people have improved significantly in just a week.

What are your BS and PS scores like?

BS 8 and PS 8
i would not suggest taking your test. at the very best you get a good VR section and you manage an 8.. a 24 will not open as many doors as say a 26 or 27 would. not to mention if you do worse than your PS and BS scores....
