I am currently a high school senior. I applied and got accepted into the early acceptance program for University of South Alabama's college of medicine. The campus is decent, I wouldn't mind going there, but what I don't know is how good the med school is. I have until March 8th to make a decision (very early). Anybody know? Are med students able to get into good residencies? At my interview, I remember they said a 'good percentage' get into their first choice. Any current students have anything to say? Thanks.

The consensus around here seems to be, it really doesnt matter what medical school you go to. What matters is how you do when you get there. Every medical school is going to send people into great residencies, you just need to make your own way.

Is this an early assurance program, where you are guaranteed a spot at south alabama but are allowed to apply elsewhere?

Thanks. I dont' think i'm allowed to apply elsewhere.

Bump...any more comments?

Congrats on the acceptance. I applied to South Alabama. It's a good school, as are pretty much all U.S. schools. It isn't "top-tier", but you'll get a quality medical education there. You will get into a good residency if you make good grades and perform well on your boards, and, again, this goes for pretty much all schools.
If you are ABSOLUTELY sure you want to go to medical school, and you liked USA when you interviewed, I'd say take it. Many many many people who go into college with the desire to go to med school never make it. Some of them can't cut it, and others don't make it for other reasons. If you have a guaranteed spot now, that's great.
I think a question you should ask yourself is, are you ABSOLUTELY sure this is what you want to do. Many pre-meds change their minds along the way. Don't commit to anything unless you KNOW what you're getting yourself into. It's a lot of hardwork, and, while you'll probably do well for yourself financially, you may not make as much money as you think. If money isn't the biggest factor in your decision, and you are aware of the sacrifices that you are committing to, then I guess you have to ask yourself if you would be satisfied going to USA or if you are willing to risk not getting in later to have the chance to go to a more prestigious school. Good luck.

South is my number one choice. I go to Spring hill college which is about 1.5 miles down the road. South, in my opinion, is the best med school in alabama. Only thing is it is young compared to the other med schools that are top in the country. South has only been around since i think the 70s. I have a cousin who is in her 3rd year and i know a lot about the med school through her and her husband who teaches chemistry there. The med school is my number one choice because research is not there 1st priority. In third and fourth year the rotations are VERY hands on and you learn a lot more than going to a bigger reasearch hospital that only lets you watch. At south the MAKE you get involved if you want to pass. Also you can get into the best residencies no matter where you go you need good grades and usmle score. South does crank out people who get into the best residencies in the country.

you can apply elsewhere but med schools do not look highly on doing that. my cousin told me of a guy who he taught who had a 37
MCAT and was preaccepted to south and no one took him and he had an AWSOME application
