:luck: Hey all:

My best friend just finished her 2nd year. She has senior status due to high school AP/dual enrollment credits. She is done with all of her med school pre-requisites (3.735 GPA), and this summer she is enrolling in 3 upper division courses required for her major (biology). She is thinking about graduating next summer. She is planning on taking the AUGUST MCAT, and if the scores are reliable, perhaps applying for next year's class.

Question 1: When should she apply: after or before receiving the mcat score? could she eject her application if the scores aren't solid?
Question 2: is it ok to med schools to see only the grades for lower division and pre-reqs in a transcript, or should she wait until she is done with these 3 upper division courses that she's taking in the summer to send in her transcript?
Question 3: Is 1 year of volunteering at a hospital (in the ER/visiting patients) and work experience in other areas + involvement in some extra curricular activities good enough?
Question 4: Where does the personal statement go? How long shall it be?

THANK U ALL SO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH 🙂

As far as applying, I believe she should complete the primary over the summer before her MCAT, and then once her MCAT scores come out they will be sent to AACOMAS. I'm not sure about cancelling the apps should she not be happy with her score.
She does not need to wait for all her grades to come out before applying - if she wishes, she can send an updated transcript directly to the schools to which she applies. It's not necessary though - the school I will be attending never saw any of my Senior grades.
That amount of extracurricular involvement sounds fine - but she should really spend time shadowing a DO if she can. She'll need a letter from one, and schools love experience with a DO that shows you know what it's about.

She would have to apply before receiveing the scores, and no, she couldn't remove her app if she doesn't like them. Tell her to wait to apply until the following cycle, so she'll have her scores already and not be behind the eightball in the application cycle (with August MCAT scores there will be people accepted to schools before she even gets secondaries). It's much more worth it to get the upper-level grades on her transcript and apply in the following June. She'll be f*cking herself over by applying too early (just my opinion).

agreed. an this way you give yourself more time to do ECs as well to solidify the app. grades are nice, but they alone will get you nothing.
