What would you think about doing a MPH while reapplying to medical school? Would that help my chances if I were to do that? Or would it be better to go the Premedical Postbaccalaureate program? The reason I am wanting to do the MPH route is to

1. Get into medical school
2. Backup Plan for another job, also while reapplying to medical school.

Has the MPH programs been sucessful?

Thanks

It depends more on what your stats/background are. If you haven't taken the premed prereqs, an MPH isn't going to get you them (I don't think). If you have a low BCPM or haven't taken hard sciences in a number of years, med schools are going to prefer that you take a courseload of hard science (upper level if you already have or don't need to retake the prereqs) over an MPH. But if you already have good recent hard sciences and are already a borderline-acceptable candidate, the MPH should make you a better and more interesting candidate for med school. But I defer to people who took this route - I didn't.

I can understand your #2 reason for wanting to do an MPH. The process of trying to get into med school is long and expensive, so it's scary to think of spending all this time/money and still not get in. Might as well get a marketable degree at the same time, right? On the other hand, I've read and would agree with other posts that an MPH might not be the best route if you are trying to fix a low BCMP gpa or low MCAT. If that's your case, you might want to do something different (like a hard science post bac or an MCAT prep class or both)that will allow you to spend the majority of your time addressing your weaknesses in your application, to maximize your chances of admission as a reapplicant. If your grades/mcat arent so bad and youve already expressed interest in public health in your first application, I think a MPH could be beneficial.
