I'm in a situation that some people out there might simpathize with. I'm currently finishing my bacher's and must say that I've done disasterously atrocious. I was extremely immature and partied way too much and my grades suffered in the process. My overall gpa is going to be way too low for me to even consider applying to dental school when I graduate in May 2006. Besides I still need to take the DAT's which I must just absolutely rock for me to have any chance. I've definately matured a great deal and will graduate this May 2006 with a degree in Management. I've been absolutely committed to my education and have maintained 3.5s and 4.0s the last two semestors. I've unfortunately bounced around from major to major and have already taken my pre-dental courses but my grades were mostly C's and D's. If I were to retake these prereques after I graduate and absolutely rock them (I mean gettiing 4.0s or close to 4.0s in everything), rock my DAT's, do the extracurricular work, do I still have a farily good chance at getting into a dental school? Also should I consider doing them at a post-bach school? Thanks

Everything is against you right now. BUT, if you put in the hard work, you should have a shot. I won't say you'll have a fairly good chance because I won't like. But, if you apply to a lot of schools, and do well on the DAT and improve your GPA to something above a 3.0, you'll have a shot for the next cycle. It's getting more and more competitive. Those getting in with 3.0s this year have something extra to offer. Good luck.

Oh yeah, and next time you should post your GPA if you're asking us to assess your chances. Atrocious means something different to different people. 😀

Hello,

Since the competition for dental schools have been considerably stiffened over the years, you need to improve your GPA to have a shot. For historical purposes, mid seventies were really tough to get in dental school and early to mid 80's were pretty easy. Now it is getting pretty darn competitive. I am sure that if I apply to dental schools now with what I had then ( 3.1 GPA and 17 DAT taken in 1989), I am sure that I wouldn't make it now. You asked about retake the predent in grad school and you need to consider this! In grad school, a B is considered average and C is a failing grade. If you apply to grad school and take those predent classes at UNDERGRADUATE levels, you MUST NOT have anything below a B. If you do, those grades WILL appear on your POST GRAD transcipt and they will be viewed as failures. What that means is that you will be send a letter of academic probation or dismissal and that looks really really bad on your transcript. My advice is to take them but NOT enroll in graduate school, that way you can prevent the potential disaster as I mentioned above. DP

Honestly I would say you have a very minimal chance of getting an acceptance. Competition is just to keen right now. I know plenty of 4.0, 19-20 DAT, great extracurriculars, that aren't getting in. People will say 4.0 doesn't mean that much to them. They want a well-rounded person who isn't a nerd. That is true, but believe me when I say 4.0 does mean a lot to them.

You have to be a real dope not to get in with a 4.0. Then again stranger things have happened this application year. :scared:

i dissagree with alot of people...

i personally believe that if you absolutely rock the DATs (23s,24s,25s) you can get in with any grades. especially since you have gone on an upward swing with your grades. they look at that. so study up take those dats and maybe retake some of the pre-reqs. good luck

Not necessarily. When you are applying to state schools, particularly in the Midwest, where they take only a handful of out of staters, even a 4.0 doesn't guarantee you a spot. And how could you be a dope if you have a 4.0?

My GPA by the time I graduate will be be a pitifull 2.2. My sci GPA will be a similar level. I know its absolutely horrendous. But I've read on this site of people who have done poorly in the past but then did a complete 180 and still got in. Thats what I want to know. I hope my past is not going to haunt me for the rest of my life. I am willing to do whatever it takes. What course of action would you guys recommend for me? Is it wise to go back to a post-bach program retake all my pre-dental courses there or can I just take them at a state school. I'm from Georgia. Thank you for a your input. I greatly appreciate it.

Dr. Phan,

Do adcoms care about the circumstances surrounding a particular grade that caused the academic probation in grad school (say for example, one and only one unfortunate C in the entire student's record in grad school) ? Can a student explain these circumstances at all, or are they doomed once they have that in their record ?

Hello,

You need to write a letter regarding why your grade was low. I had an F in my organic chem whem I applied to DS. I posted a thread regarding this situation. Please look for it under my name. Thanks. DP
