hi everyone...

i ll be soon graduating in italy and still undecide on what to do in the future, except that i want to do my residency abroad.
questions:
-anyone heard of a european country were they are still looking for doctors?(looking around it seems that each and every health system is totally saturated)
-to the extent of applying for a fellowship in the US afterwards, are all EU countries the same or am i supposed to obtain my specialisation in specific countries such as the UK to have it recognised in the US?

thanks

Traditionally, the UK used to absorb many docs from the other european countries. But they have ramped up their domestic production and as a result it is far more difficult for non-UK docs to get a foot in the door there.

Non-US training is only very rarely recognized in the US. Occasionally, europeans will go for fellowships only to the US, but that is really and exception. If you intend to train in the US, you would probably be better off to seek a residency here, then do the fellowship and then try to get some of it credited for your italian credentials.

hey f_w
thanks for the advices...
in the mean time looking for information i found out that some professors in my university in italy actually did a fellowship in the US...were they exceptions or maybe did laws changed in the mean time (they arent that young!!) or am i supposed to find a way in the beurocracy to sneak in as well?!

any european in the forum having suggestions for me??

It can be done, but it is not very common. In specialties that are not so desireable for US physicians (e.g. allergy immunology), occasionally internists from abroad will come to fill these positions without having done a US residency. In more attractive specialties like gastroenterology and cardiology this is very very uncommon.

ena,
Please check http://residency-database.helmsic.gr , you will find valuable information related to residency in some countries (including many EU countries and some others)

Normally as a graduated doctor from EU country, you can freely practice all around the EU countries. But in practice I'm not sure if it's easy to find a place for residency.

Ciao!

ok...now i have clearer ideas...thanks a lot to everyone!
