I just finished with Chem 102 for the second time. I ended up with a D in the class. Not suspected at all! I have A's and some B's in all my Bio classes, and apparently suck at chem. I was going to take the DATs in August...I signed up for Kaplan courses and was going to start intensly studying for them now. Should I even apply, because don't u have to have a C? Will dental school accept me if I do awesome on the DATs???

You may have to take Chem 102 again for a higher grade. In the AADSAS online application both the D and what you get next (if you retake the class) will count towards how AADSAS calculates your GPAs (overall, science, etc.). So, getting a higher grade if you retake the class can lessen the impact of the D grade in the AADSAS calculation of your GPAs. Studying chemistry for the DAT may actually help you if you retake Chem 102. However, the choice to retake it or not is up to you.

Good luck on the DAT 🙂

if your gpa ends up ok besides that D then i say dont retake...as long as you have a good gpa and dats you are in...i dont think one grade will hold you from getting in.

thanks for the advice! i really was going to have a nervous breakdown. im not going to give up, because i know i can succeed.

some schools don't accept D's as completion of a required course. So you should look up on that.

i don't think it matters if you retake it. you said you got a D after the SECOND TIME. so even if you get an A it wont matter because you took the class 3 times!

You may have some difficulty with the admissions committee getting a D the second time around. If that is the only bad grade on your transcript you should be fine, but if there are other poor grades that may be an indicator to them that you may not be able to handle the coursework. Make sure you can handle the DAT's gchem before taking it and think about repeating the course and trying to get an A, especially since things are becoming more competitive with each application cycle.

I feel you completely about sucking at chem... I HATE CHEMISTRY!!!!!! 😡 Anyways, i have started studying the Kaplan book for chem, and it makes it a lot easier then the chem class itself... I made Bs in gchem, but I completely BS'd my way through these classes, and i gotta pay for it now studying and not knowing a whole lot... Anyways, apply with that D if your GPA is still good, but u will most likely have to retake it before you matriculate. Keep your head up and stay focused!

I also hate CHEM. When I started studying for the chem part of the DAT I felt like I was starting from scratch but that was not a deterrent from doing well on that part since Kaplan breaks it down well.

I recommend you take the class over again and do better. It seems like you can do it since you say you have A's and B's in your other classes. Do you feel like you could do better?

I say take the course a third time. I also got a D in second semester g chem. Most of the schools I called said you need to score a C or better to meet the pre-reqs.
