I am in a dilemma here. i got accepted into 2 DO schools and waitlisted at 3 MD schools. But today i got a phone call from SUNY-Buffalo and was offered a chance at a postbac program. The postbac program is being offered by the associated medical schools of NY and you had to have applied to one of the 14 associated schools to get into the program. i was nominated by University of Rochester. I don't have to take the MCAT again or even reapply and everything is being paid for. The only stipulation is that i get at least a B in all the classes i take during the 1-yr program. if i do then i start with the class of 2011. what do i do? I am not trying to start a MD/DO war but I am genuinely conflicted. i do think that I can get at least a B in my classes. I think rochester is a great school aside from the cold and the distance to my family. But i also like DMU the school I thought i was going to. i don't know what to do. My undergrad GPA was 3.98, MCAT 22.

You already have an acceptence to medical school. There are no certainties if you let those go..

Go past the MD/DO. Which school would you be happier at? Curriculums? Also with DMU that is one less year of schooling.

Also what about financial aid, did either give you anything? I'd go with DMU but that is just me.

I can totally relate to this dilemma. If you are really into getting an MD then I would defer the acceptance and do the program at Buffalo. It's a great opportunity to get into a great school!! You have nothing to risk so go for it! Worst comes to worst and you go to DO school a year later. FYI, I personally knew a guy that went through the same problem but had 3 kids and had a bunch to risk. He deferred for a year, did an SMP at EVMS and Voila..instant MD! So go for it!!

Of course he/she does! If they do not get a B in every class, there goes 2 acceptances and 2 years you could have been in medical school, X amount of additional debt, and nothing to show for it.

Worst comes to worst and you go to DO school a year later.

Again, there is no way to say you will definitely have an acceptance. And it will not be a year later, it will be two years later because you still have to apply over again and wait out the lag year.

Did you not read my post? Defer one of the DO acceptances for a year and do the post-bac. If the post-bac does not work out enroll in the DO program.

Not worth the wait.

Going allopathic opens up many more doors for you career wise than DO. Waiting one measly year, especially if your young, is a small price to pay to give you a leg up in your career. Im not trying to cast a cloud over DO's but if you want a competitive residency than a one year wait is a very small price to pay.

while i agree for the most part, DO's are extremely high demand nowadays then MDs because of the shortage of MDs, and not to mention that Do's runs the same salary doing teh same things. But i do agree that there are programs out there that do not want DOs, but this is apparently changing

I was in a similar program at a diff school. Getting a 3.0 is damn hard. I busted my ass off and pulled mainly B+s and one very low B. If I would have missed a few more questions I would have gotten a C in that class...and my GPA would have been less than a 3.0. IF the school has a + and - system (B, B+, B-) then a 3.0 is for sure doable..but the program that I was in had just a letter grade with no +s or -s. SO my 89.5s were the same as someone elses 80s (B). I would ask other people in the program u wanna go into.
