I really need advice about to do about my situation. I am in senior year and have a several interviews at different schools with a 3.6 gpa (science and non science). This semester I became very ill and missed nearly a month of classes. I only have nine credits but one of them is for Physical Chemistry and because of my sickness I missed an exam. We have three exams each worth 30% and 10% homework. My professor said even though I am excused he will not allow me to makeup his exam b/c it is against his policy as stated in the syllabus. So my options at this point are to withdraw from my class and not get my undergraduate degree or stick with it and get the highest possible grade of D. 😡 I am afraid if I stick with it and schools see I got a D or D- in this light semester they will take away my acceptance. But at the same time this class is required for my major and is only offered in the fall and they wont allow me to take it anywhere else and want to get my degree. I thought of petitioning my situation to the deen but b/c no make up exams are stated in his syllabus and that is the "contract" I was told it would fall on deaf ears. I am so confused about what to do!!

When you are accepted to any schools, just brief them on the situation. If it's an excused absence due to sickness, I don't see why the schools wouldn't understand.

they wont understand b/c the dental schools wont see why my college and prof wont take illness into consideration so they will think what i am saying is BS and that grade is warranted...apparently in the past ppl have tried to pull tricks for this class b/c its so hard that the professor has this policy...normally at this point in the semester they wont let you withdraw so that is them being kind in some twisted way

Withdraw and settle for a B.A. in Biology. If you have several interviews, you're probably getting into a school....what does it matter now!! A B.S. or a DDS...😉

i wish tissy but that is not a realistic option I am a Bio-Chem major...to get that BS in Biology I would have to take a hell of lot more classes in Biology!! different curriculum

That's weird...I thought a BA in biology was a lot shorter..i was in a similar situation as you but settled for a BA in biology and it's going to work out...you should look into it..there's a difference between BA and BS.."I'm sure you know that.." look it up though...if not than do what you gotta do and see what happens..don't say anything until you're accepted..my 2 cents..

That's a very weird policy to have, especially if you had an EXCUSED sickness. You should definitely schedule an appointment with a dean or anyone who ranks above this guy.

werd. it sounds like you go to a small school like mine. we have pchem once a year, and anatomy once and year and eveything else once a year. it sucks.

Talk to the Dean. You have no other options until then.

i've heard of things like this at my college too. you have to stick with it for now at least. however, if you don't drop it, and recieve the D, is that considered passing the class? stick with it to graduate, explain the problem at your interviews and see what they say. good luck with all that.

Call all schools to determinine what their policy is regarding having a D in a class. Make sure you have evidence of your illness from a physician. I would also continue taking P-chem unless you want to take an extra year off, if you are assured that schools would have no prob with your D.

If all else fails, take a year off, and withdraw from the class (see if it shows in your transcript, otherwise a W is definitely better than a bad grade). Taking a year off is not necessarily bad. Sometimes you need that time off before you start the rigorous dental curriculum.

Unfortunately, originally I was thinking that you switch to a chem major. However, both biochem and chem share the same required class, p-chem

is the class you are taking a prereq for dental schools? if that's the case then there might be a problem, since some dental schools want you to get a C in the prereqs needed.

i would definitely go to the dean, no question about that. this is a very trivial issue that could potentially keep you out of grad school (esp. since you have interviews lined up!). do whatever you can to fight through it.

i still can't believe they would do that! seesh!

Never say die!!!
Definitely continue with the class, muck through it and do your best...you may need to present the actual coursework to someone to demonstrate your effort.

Meet with the dean...do not go on what someone's brother's cousin's next door neighbor experienced. You could consider meeting with the ombudsman, too.

Another poster mentioned a physician's note...it would be my expectation that if you have been sick this long...about a month?...you would be seeking professional care....so demonstrate that as well.

Basically, you need to demonstrate you are not some punk college kid looking for the easy way out...that you are mature, responsible and willing to meet reasonable expectations. It's like you just need to jump through the hoops...that is what this and dental school app/interview/accept...LIFE is all about.

Best to you.

PS Hope you are feeling better...do we need to send care packages???

yeaa my schoool is ******ed like that. im thinking about speaking to the dean but the chair of the department already told me that at this point the dean cant do anything. i would have to wait till i get my grade then go through an appeal process to contest it which will eventually go to a committee, the dean cannot force a professor to do something in the middle of a semester. but how bad is that to call up a school and ask them if they will take you when you get a D in a class thats embarassing and i already know that is the highest grade i can get...bringing it up in an interview is a sure shot for rejection..and as competitive as things are I feel it would be a major strike against someone accepted...its just so so depressing to be in this situation after having worked so hard to give myself a shot to get into dental school and have some prof having a power trip jeopardize my future BLAHH...thanks for the help tho

If this is the most ******ed rule you come up against...count yourself lucky. Just be serious, be responsible, don't whine and definitely don't say it's not fair...just be a man (or woman) about it and jump the hoops. The whole appeal thing is to see if you have persistence and can perservere to the end...and you will...I know it.

You are right...don't say anything in the interviews...let the ADCOM bring it up...it's possible they could over look it...but a D in the middle of a bunch of A's would make a person wonder. Then...you get to tell the great story of how you perservered in spite of the odds, in spite of what seemed to be hopeless, you sought every avenue to resolve the situation. By following through it shows you are a thinker, a problem solver.

But whatever you do, never say to anyone over 40 years old..."but it's not fair"...they probably have a passle of teens at home whining that to them every night, the last thing they want to hear is that from you.🙂
