Help!!!

Hi guys,
I am new to SDN so this might be redundant.

I did horrible in undergrad and was on academic probation and have 10 W's. This was because during this time my mother had a heart attack which resulted in tripe bypass surgery and six months later her kidneys completely failed on her. I had to work to support myself through school and help pay for her medical bills. Also the stress of a sick mother changes your priorities.

Since then I have completed a post bacc program for my pre-dental requirements and took biochem and anatomy. My GPA from that was a little over 3.8 so overall I will probably have a 3.1, my BCP will probably be around 3.5. I have done research, shadowing, mentoring, have good letters and all that good stuff. Also I plan on taking my DATs in late July and hope to get 20+.

So, is it possible to get into a competitive school?? Also I am a Cali native so want to stay in state but with my past I don’t know if that is possible. IS there anyone else here in my predicament?? What schools should I apply to??

I don't think your cause is lost at all, but don't be surprised if you don't get in this round either. I know people who have great GPA's and great DAT scores, but they didn't get in. I also know people with poor grades and just ok DAT score who got in. It sucks, but schools are just weird. Just submit your apps ASAP, do your best on the DAT and see what happens.

If you don't get in this year, and you really know dentistry is your passion, continue to take classes and bring up your overall GPA, retake the DAT, and continue with all the shadowing and volunteer work. Then apply as early as possible next year with the new GPA and etc… Good luck.

your story is very compelling and i think you should let the dental schools know that. add it into your personal statement if you havent already.
