Help!!!

I really need so advise on applying to dental school. i have a gpa of 3.4 and a science gpa of 3.0. this are not the perfect grades but i do have a lot of experience in dentistry. The only way i can explain about my gpa is i have been working 30hr+ each week in a dental office as an assistant ever seen i was a freshmen in college. due to the works hrs i have been lacking on studying but now i have cut down on the work hrs and start to focus back on school work. do you think i will have a chance to get into NYU with this gpa and a DAT score of 19...

I think you have a chance to get into a lot of places.

The fact that you have been interested in dentistry since you were a freshman shows that you are not just applied to dental school because you didn't want to go to medical school.

If you worked while you were in college, that could be a reason your GPA is a little lower than some of the other applicants that didn't work, and didn't have a job as an assistant. That is something to keep in mind that a lot of the "4.0 students" may not have had to work as much as you, and may have had more time studying.

If you had decent DAT scores in the sciences, that will help to show that maybe your classes were just graded harshly, and you still understood/learned the material.

I think you have an excellent chance of getting in. Not everyone has hands on experience like you do, and I think that is KEY for dental admissions because the people that will make valuable dentists are the people that KNOW they want to be dentists because they have experienced what it is like to work in a patients mouth!

Can't offer much of an opinion w/o all of your DAT scores. Break it down for us and you'll get more accurate responses.

Amanda5, you didn't provide much info about yourself in regards to your question. From the little that you did provide, here's what I would do if I were you based on my own re-application experience.

1. I'm under the impression that you are applying in May of '08. Therefore, I would aim to score at least 20 on the DAT, and take a full load of upper level Bio classes this Spring '08 semester / quarter.

2. Keep taking classes through the summer and Fall '08 semester. By the time that the schools review your AADSAS application, you will have a Spring semester of science classes that you will hopefully do well in.

3. If you don't have an acceptance letter by Dec. 1 of '08, then you will have a chance to provide an AADSAS update in Dec with your grades of Fall semester. Fall semester should be a full-load of bio classes.

4. Keep taking bio classes in Spring of '09 and get involved in research. That way, if you get an interview in late winter, you will still be taking classes which will sound great in the interview. In addition, you will be asked about research experience.

5. I know that this all sounds like overkill, but this route will greatly increase your chances of acceptance given the fact that you have a 3.0 science gpa right now. In addition, if you don't get in for '09, this plan will greatly increase your chances for your reapplication the following year assuming you do well in your upper level bio classes.
