is it true that getting into dental school is all about politics? i just recently started thinking about applying for dental school instead of medical school, and some of my friends have told me that. i'm sure anyone can say that about other fields, but can anyone point me in the right direction?

politics? what? if you have a good gpa, solid extra curriculars, good dat scores, awesome personal statement, interview well....why wouldn't you get accepted?

In all honesty, you are more likely to get into a school where you have connections. But where isn't that true? I wouldn't worry about it though. Anyways connections only help you if you've got the stats to be getting in in the first place. I wouldn't define dental schools as being highly political, so don't rule it out as a career option. It's probably no different than med school in that way.

Ya, the thousands of seats in dental schools are all filled by decisions based on politics. Schools do not try to fill their classes with competent, hard working individuals, they just give them all to the kids of alumns and rich people's children.

I try to never be rude in a post, but this thread is garbage. To label the entire dental selection process as 'all politics' is insulting and doesn't belong here.

well, i was under the impression that threads are open to any kinds of questions danny. i'm only a student looking for answers, like many others here...

You don't have to be connected or rub elbows with deans to get in. Your friends are perpetuating a myth that they heard from their brother's roomate's friend's uncle that knew this guy who talked to this girl that said she once heard someone in a crowded room say that. Just get good grades and decent DAT scores, and you'll get in.

Hilarious statement.

Anyways, to the OP: dental school is NOT all about politics, although knowing an alumni might help to a certain extent. As long as you are a competitve applicant with good GPA and DAT, you should be good to go.

I am sure it helps to have political connections.
However, dental schools are not going to accept you just because you have connections. If you are not a strong enough applicant, you won't get in no matter what. I know a couple of my friends who were bragging about their connections but didn't get accepted. Good luck. 🙂
