I'm a rising senior and will be applying to college in the fall. I know I have a while to choose, but I still can't decide whether to choose dental or pharmacy. I like both of them because of the flexible hours, the hands on experience, and good pay. I'm still unsure about the working envioronments though. Most of the dentists I talked to were in small practices(many times their own), and pharmacists were in retail stores like CVS. I'm probably going to end up going to the University of Minnesota, and their dental and pharmacy schools are both ranked in the top 5. Could anyone give me a little bit more information on these 2 paths? Thanks.

Really it isn't going to make much difference in the classes you take. The prereq's for pharmacy and dental school are mostly the same. Talk to your health professions advisor for more information on that. My advice would be to shadow both professions for a considerable amount of time, research the fields very well, and then make your decision. You don't have to make a decision right now, so don't feel rushed to make a decision.

btw, there are no dental school rankings.

On this forum, it seems that every dental school is ranked in top 5. :meanie:

OP, first attend college and find out what you are good at.

Ok, to the OP, you can switch from any major to a pre-health major 1 year in college, You are fine. Like someone said, shadow both THEN decide.

My dad is a pharmacist and hates it. I worked at a CVS as a tech and hated it too. You have to remember that you work a lot at retail stores even though you make more money. It is not really that great of a handoff. Hospitals are stresful too and you have to work pretty much everyother weekend. I can put you in touch with him if you would like me too!

Yeah the reason I ask is because I hear so many sides of the story. I would love to talk with your dad. Thanks.
