I have a serious question, im in my second week of med school but i wont be able to keep going for now, i had a personal family problem and i wont be able to attend class. My family needs me. Im going back to my home state. I wont be able to attend my current med school. Will i be able to apply next year in my state starting as an ms1???? Can i just reapply, specifically in my home state????

Can you explain more about what happened?
Some schools grant a leave of absence. I'm sure faculty will want to do what they can to help you so talk to them about what your options are.

well something happened in my situation where i had to leave to my home town to help out my family,i highly doubt that i will be able to live where my med school is located.I want to know if i can just reapply through amcas to another medical school to start next fall. to try to get into a med school a little closer home.

Definitely talk with the admin at your school. I don't think you can just reapply through AMCAS since you already started at school. Most likely you will have to obtain a transfer. Don't make any decisions though without talking with your school, they should be able to help you.

Yes, I gathered that much. I asked because they might be more forgiving for certain situations, like you suddenly becoming the sole provider or having to become a caretaker. Your school will want to do everything they can to help you since losing you as a student makes their retention rates look bad and because they've invested in your success by admitting you. I think the fact that you got in bodes well for acceptance somewhere else, though you will likely need to address reasons for dropping out to wherever you apply.

why do i need to do a transfer if i want to start from ms1??? i dont think i can transfer if i never even started basically. just reapply...i know i should talk to my school but im 95% sure that it will be near to impossible to attend that particular school.seriously.. med school is the last thing im thinking about right now. i just want to know if i can just reapply next fall after the dust settles. at the end of the day i wont be able to attend my med school anymore,it will be too difficult for me and my family

Maybe you are right. I certainly don't know what is going on in your life and only you can judge what will be right for you in the long-term.

But my point is, this decision does not need to be made right now, in the midst of a personal crisis. It certainly doesn't need to be made by just up and disappearing from your med school without talking to ANYONE.

All you do by doing that is unnecessarily close a door. Maybe in a month or six months or whatever, you will find that things have changed and you may be able to come back...or maybe not.

But you are not the first student at your school to go to a crisis. TALK TO SOMEONE.

You may be surprised at what they can do to help. Even if it is just offering you a leave of absence rather than a withdrawal...that allows you the time to fully assess the situation away from the heat of the moment and come to the best decision.

This.

Plus you may be able to take a leave of absence and THEN transfer, without having to reapply (assuming your situation really is as dire as you're making it seem).

Good luck with your situation, but if you're unwilling to speak with someone out your school it's unlikely it will turn out as positive as it could otherwise. They want to help you, let them.

If you matriculate at 1 med school and stop for any reason, it is very difficult to get admitted anywhere else other than the school that admitted you in the first place.
I can guarantee you that if you apply next fall, you will not get in without doing a whole lot of extra leg work like getting your present dean to make some calls supporting you etc.
As was said above, your best bet is to transfer. I would take a leave of absence and work on transfering during that year.

Again, if you withdraw, be prepared to spend a lot of time and effort to get back in. Waaay more than it took to get in the first time.

Sorry, but I just can't imagine any family situation so extenuating that you had to leave med school for a year.

Is this a Caribbean school? If so, sure, leave. Tons of people drop out of those schools.

if this is a US med school then talk to your dean of students or someone IMMEDIATELY. i had to deal with an awful family situation during ms1 where i basically disappeared for about a month while struggling with the situation for 3-5 months before this (from about october of ms1).
they are incredibly helpful and understanding. they will accommodate you to the best of their ability and may even let you take this year off and start again next year.

but please dont do anything rash like drop out with the hopes of applying again next year.every year it seems to be harder and harder to get into a med school with every passing year and when schools find out that you were in one and dropped out, they may just automatically dismiss you. be proactive, talk to ppl who can help you bc they really do want to help you, they want you to succeed

Thats exactly what will happen. I was told by an Adcom at an east coast school that those applications that AMCAS flags as "previously matriculated" get tossed in the rejected pile as soon as they see them. Thats why i said you would need your present dean to make some calls on your behalf to get them to even look at your application.
You would have an easier time trying to transfer than dropping out and trying to get admitted somewhere else.

Most medical schools in this country will grant an Leave of Absence for emergency "family problems" that occur. You need to speak with the administration at your medical school for their policies on this ASAP.

Under LOA, you can't transfer into another medical school. In order to do transfer, you must be in good academic standing (LOA means you have no academic standing because you are not in school under an LOA) and have the permission of both schools for a transfer. Under an LOA, you won't get permission from another school for a transfer which means that under an LOA, you have to solve your problems, go back to your original school, complete at least one year and then apply for transfer if you meet the criteria at that time for a transfer.

If you drop out, you are likely not going to be admitted into any school in this country. In any event, you need to be discussing your problems with your school administration who will assist you in figuring out a sound course for your particular situation. This means that you should get off the public message board and get in contact with the people who can actually help you most.

You need to speak with the Dean of Student Affairs at your school immediately to discuss your situation and see what options they present to you. I wouldn't just drop out without discussing it with your Dean first.

ok so i went back to talk to the assistant dean of student affairs and she told me that she understood the reason why i left. She said that i can take a LOA and come back next year but she also told me that if i decide to go to another medical school that i can just apply all over again using amcas and interviewing and everything. If i were to get accepted then i would just have to let them know that im not returning. I already took one test in my current school but she said that it would show up as a W since i didnt take the final. So it wouldnt actually be a "transfer".

You need to ask a dean to call a school in your area and talk to them. I am guessing there are only like 1 or 2 schools near you, that aren't great odds. You need to use the resources at your school and ask them to put in a good word for you.

I can guarantee you that your chances of getting accepted are very low without this, regardless of the quality of your application. It sounds like your dean is very understanding. Take advantage of that and let them help you.

Good for you for talking with your dean. However your chances of getting into another med school are not good. That med school will worry if you will drop out again the first week. Do not burn any bridges. Having a "W" on your record is not good and will take some explaining when you are applying for residencies. Please get some counseling when you get home and work with your counselor to find ways to balance your school and your personal life so that you can become a physician

Well, just wanted to let everybody know that I just got accepted at another medical school close to where I live. It wasn't easy but I was able to get accepted again!!!

Congratulations. Do you mind sharing how the process went and what (if any) extra hoops they made you jump through.
