Hi everyone🙂 I need an advice
i got 29S (9/9/11), GPA 3.9, physiology major
I am planning on applying in 2011 and probably want to retake the mcat in june/july. Is it worth applying with my score and than updating it, or is it too risky?

Thank you

do you mean apply for entrance this coming Fall (10 months from now), or Fall of 2012?

To enter in fall of 2012🙂

if your retake happens by July of next year, you'll be fine. Submit AMCAS before then though; there's a place on the application where you can indicate that you have another score pending. complete your secondaries as they come in. that way schools will consider you as soon as your new score appears in August.

two caveats:

- it'll likely be a challenge to be working on AMCAS, secondaries, and MCAT prep all at the same time. fair warning.

- it's generally only worth it to retake if you can get your practice scores at least 5 points higher than your old score. otherwise you run the risk of getting a substantially similar or, god forbid, a lower one.

edit: i do think the score you have now is a solid one, well balanced and with your GPA would likely get you an MD acceptance somewhere, assuming everything else is in order etc

Retake the exam if your practice tests are consistently 5 points or greater above your actual score, and if you plan to change something about your test preparation. You want to prevent getting the same or lower score on your next attempt.
