hi,i just got my step 1 scores.246/99.
i was of the idea that i 99 means 99 percentile.but i learned that it isnt so.this has left me worried .because i fail to understand how good a chance i have to get a residency......especially because i am a IMG.

Also i have heard people saying that beyond getting a pass these scores realiy dont matter.I want to know that ,what then does matter. And how can i improve my chances,to get a residency of my choice in california.
Please help!!!😕

don't worry...it is not a percentile, but you still can't do better than a 99...

if i get a 99, i will be pooping my pants with joy! celebrate, you did awesome....

congrats!

Actually you can still improve on the 3 digit score 🙄, but 99/246 is a very good score (probably ~87th percentile).

Considering you IMG status though, you still need to take Step 2 before you apply-so concentrate your efforts cuz your only as desirable as your last score (give or take).

As far as chances of matching in Cali...depends on whatcha looking for.

Good luck!

246/99 is around a 97-98th percentile score. Good job.

It depends when the she took the test. Mona, you can figure it out by looking at the mean and SD.

My guess would be a little below the 90th percentile if it's a recent test. If it's from last year, it would be a little better, close to 95th percentile probably.

In any case, it's a great score. Congratulations.

Congratulations on the great score Mona! Could you tell me how you prepared? What books did you use for each subject? And how long did you study? Thanks

Thanxs everyone for your very positive feedback. It helped alleviate my worries......atleast for now.

I was wondering whether there is anything i can do to prepare for my interviews,in order to make a more positive impact.

Another thing i want to know is, does being a IMG without a permanent resident status in US,
lowers my chances to get a residency as compared to someone who is a citizen or has a green card.

THANKS ONCE AGAIN.

hi caynaud following is the list of the books i studied in prepration for step 1.

ANATOMY : HIGH YIELD SERIES.
PHYSIOLOGY : BRS.
BIOCHEMISTRY: LIPPINCOT

CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY : HIGH YIELD
PATHOLOGY :BRS
PHARMACOLOGY :LIPPINCOT.
MICROBIOLOGY:JAWETZ REVIEW.

for the questions i used kaplan Q bank, nms .Also i did the usmle practise questions they send you.
i prepared for this test in about 4 months ,putting in about 4 hours of study each day for the theory.I did the question banks off and on whenever doing texts became too routine.

I hope this helps you.🙂

I speak the truth, my friend.

Your 99 from 2 years ago was 98th percentile, right? That score would translate into a 260 today, I at least.

They should just give you a percentile and nothing else. All these 2 and 3 digit scores are just confusing.

Hmmm... I'm skeptical... scores have gone up that much? Mona please figure out what percentile you fall on (look at the back of your score report for the mean and SD) and post it to settle this once and for all.

😉

I can confirm that a recent 246/99 is just below 90th percentile because I took Step 1 this year on June 12 and got that exact score. The mean was 217 and the standard deviation was 24.

so does it mean that when i apply for residency........they will be calculating my percentile score or looking for the 3 digit score.

the mean and S.D GIVEN WERE.......215 AND 21.

I wouldn't worry too much about your score, Mona. It has been my experience that many program directors, although they know that the 2 digit score is not a %ile, still seem to view it as one as a convenience. Of course, that may depend on the specialty, but I have seen that.

If that's your SD, did you really take it this year? I imagine they'll kinda look at when you took the test and compare it to other candidates who took it around the same time.

a 99/246 with those SDs is an absolutely amazing score.

i guess I'm lucky i only had like 10 stats questions because I never liked math.....if my score was 249/99, then can anyone tell me at what percentile I'm at with a mean of 216 and a SD of 23?
my best guess is that its gotta be above 84 but well below 97.5

Why are you people w/ amazing scores freaking out about getting good residencies? A score over 240 will not hinder you no matter what program you want. Concentrate on the rest of your application (grades, LOR, etc), and you should be good to go. Congrats on your great scores!!
