Unless your MCAT is in the high 20s, I don't think you have a shot truthfully.

I apologize in advance for the harshness of what I'm about to say.

I truly hope with all my being that you do not get into either of those schools with those grades.

I'm sure people will think I'm overly cruel in saying that, but before I continue, do you mind if I ask what happened in undergrad that caused that sort of abysmal GPA?

Podiatry school is no joke, so if a 2.8 represents your full effort, I wholeheartedly recommend you seek another berth.

I feel like I just read a twitter post by Snooki...

Hello there, even though the odds of getting in with that GPA is low, there are people that go to my school who had very similar stats and are doing exceptionally well. Please do not let anyone discourage you from going after your dreams. Work hard on studying for the MCAT and completely knock it out the ball park! I say give it a shot and apply broadly. Don't just focus on Scholl or DMU because you will be limiting yourself of other opportunities. In the end, a DPM is a DPM no matter what school they attended. The worst a school can say to you at this point is no. Give it a shot but make sure to explain why your GPA is as low as it is. The schools that actually take a personal statement into consideration MIGHT give you an interview. I am speaking out of experience. I had very similar stats as you but I had an EXTREMELY good upward trend and a pretty decent MCAT. I applied to all nine schools and got interviews for four of them. So it IS possible. And contrary to popular belief, I am doing EXTREMELY well in the program thus far.

And so it continues...

The babysitting and wonderfully upbeat hopefulness of abysmal performance, and here people wonder why the programs are looked at in a negative light by other healthcare professions.

Are you really saying that if your full effort got you a 2.8 in undergrad you can do do well in podiatry school, or are you saying that slacking off and doing the bare minimum is fine and dandy 'cause "someone will take you" and you can always prove yourself later...when you're...an adult or something?

Give me a break...

Yes, there are schools that will accept most any candidate, and I'm sure even with those scores and a poor explanation and MCAT scores you'll find an interview audience and most likely an acceptance.

This...is a good thing for our field?

Excuse me.... please don't put words in my mouth! You are what we call a dream crusher.... If you would have read my response carefully to come up with a tactful remark you would have seen that I did say the chances of getting in with those scores are low BUT there are cases, determined by EXPERIENCED faculty members, as the exceptions. I am not trying to justify the OPs GPA as being great I am just NOT a dream crusher. Please don't get it twisted!

I'd like to give my gratitude to trinifootdoc - particularly when I was applying last year. I also had a low GPA but a strong upward trend in the last 2 years (I had my "excuses" well written in my personal statement) as well as a solid MCAT (landed 10's in the sections). I can see how somebody with a high GPA might scoff at me for landing 7 out of 9 interviews, but unfortunately such is life. Just keep in mind that I wasn't cruising through each semester with a bad GPA, my semester GPA's toward the end were respectable...

On the other hand with grade replacement for DO, my GPA was just a bit below average (I certainly could have applied), yet I still chose podiatry after having shadowed docs from both fields.

In the future, I will try to return the favor to others that trinifootdoc (and others here) did for me during application season - albeit, if you won't take the time to NOT make your post looks like a twitter post from Snooki, then I won't take the time to give support where it's needed.

Cheers! 👍

Dream crusher?

Let's be realistic about this...if a dream is something someone has for longer than the 6 months prior to graduation, they won't have a 2.8 GPA. I know. I was there. I had an autoimmune disease that ran rampant through two of my undergraduate years, and lost my nephew during the same time.

It you have a dream, you'll get it done. I'm not crushing anyone's dreams. I'm just being realistic about this. If you worked your hardest through your undergraduate years and pulled a 2.8, you're not cut out for this profession. If you had all sorts of problems that came about that dragged your GPA down, well...that's life, friend.

i had a lot on my plate in undergrad. family and life and financial crisis where one of them, but after i graduated i realized that i wanna be a dpm. i love the fiield. im not who i was before. that was not my best shot. i really appreciate the words of advice from everyone. how were ur stats if u dont mind me askin. and besides mcat i am retaking a cpl classes that will push my gpa to a 3.0 or atleast a 2.9 ish.

Look, friend...I'm sorry to have gotten on my soapbox and spouted frustrations with the programs.

Here's the deal...I'm not saying that you didn't have your reasons for getting whatever GPA you got in undergrad. What I'm saying is that the course load is exponentially heavier when you get here, and issues aside, you'll just have to make the grades.

I've gone through more information and learned more in a semester of pod school than probably two years of undergrad, and I went to a science-heavy university. The information here isn't difficult, it's just a ridiculous amount, and it absolutely needs to be a priority for it to work.

If this is actually your dream, and you're not just looking for the next thing after undergrad, then with a decent (mid to upper 20's) MCAT, you'll most likely get in somewhere. If you don't, then if you're willing to take the effort to excel at pod school, I must assume that you'd be willing to take an extra semester or so if this admissions cycle doesn't pan out and bust your butt taking some intense science classes to demonstrate to admissions committees that this is what you want to do. The trend is the most important thing they look at. Good trend = good chances.

I truly understand having issues with undergrad, and trying to figure out life, dealing with family, financial, relationship and personal issues. It's additionally a mountain to climb, trying to alter 4 years of prior bad performances with good grades, a semester at a time. The numbers just don't want to go up. If this is what you want, though, then you've got to be sure enough to bet a few hundred thousand dollars on it. The last thing you want to do is not put in enough effort and wind up not passing your boards, and just sitting around with a mountain of debt and nothing to pay it with. Personal issues don't mean squat when you've got an exam a week, and 100+ dense pages of stuff to memorize for each, and be able to apply it in a second or third order exam question.

Anyway...best of luck. Really.
