Hey guys,

My dream is to be a pharmacist. But, my GPA is very low at 2.78. This is due to changing to so many different majors, and being discouraged to the point of doing horrible in some classes. This is also my last year at uni and I'm missing calculus but I'm done with all my organic chemistry courses. My question is what are my chances of getting accepted to a pharmacy school? I don't want to give up🙁

Also my chemistry grades are good. In fact all my Pre-Pharm courses are good, just my overall GPA is bad.

u said this will be ur last year at ur university. i think u should hold off on ur graduation and build ur gpa bc if u graduate u can end up doing nothing or having a hard time getting a job depending on ur degree. U should try to reach 3.0 or more. u need to take the pcat and see how well u do and see how well u do in pre-reqs. Personally my gpa is barely a 3.0 but i have mostly A's in pr-reqs and i got interviews with a 70 pcat but i got a new pcat score in october of 95 so we will see. dont give up easily though bc at first i got a 50 pcat and i kept trying, verbal was even in the 20's ;( but now 90's hehe 93 to be exact. gluck

What are your work ethics and habits like in university? If you describe me more, I think you can maximize your chances of getting into pharmacy school. It is 100% doable I'll give you that.

The more you can describe to me, the more we can get doon, faster, sooner, and better. And be honest with us.

Well from the information you have given, your chances are not good. Many schools cut off at 3.0 or 2.75 so you are at the bottom. But overall GPA is not everything.....You would have to give more information on what your application would look like at this point if you had to put it together.

What is your Pre-req GPA, all As, Bs, Cs? The big things that are going to get you an interview are GPA and PCAT(if the school uses the PCAT) and experience....If the GPA is at the very bottom then to have a chance you should be impressive in other areas and be prepared to explain GPA.

If you really want to be a pharmacist go for it, you do have a chance, but with your GPA it is not a strong chance at this point unless you make up for it in other areas. It is important to realize your GPA is below what some school will consider or right at the cutoff........
-try to fix it with more upper division courses (this can be hard if you have lots of credits)
-Do awesome on the PCAT
-Get a job in a pharmacy and go to Graduate school for a year or two to start over and get a new good GPA.

Best of luck, look into the following things and see where you stand....

-LORs
-PCAT
-volunteering
-Pharmacy Experience
-Leadership roles

Good Luck to you, you definitely have a chance you just have an obstacle to overcome.

i know you may not want to hear this but if you have any repeated classes, applying thru pharmcas is going hurt you. completing a major puts you well over 120 units, and if you have changed your major a couple of times, then you have probably accumulated a lot more. it's going to take you a while to bring that gpa up. this may take forever but try double majoring or apply for a masters degree, then apply. in the mean time, work as a pharm tech and do well on your pcat. i think a lot of school weighs dedication heavily, but it's just going to take you a while. the pharmacy curriculum is heavy, not neccessarily hard, but you need to show them that you can do it.

I don't think it's possible to raise up your GPA significantly in one year just by taking a few classes when you already have so many units. At this point your best bet is to go for an MS degree and to have a killer graduate GPA IMHO.

i will have an m.s. degree by falll 2008 with a really good gpa. i have a miserably low undergrad gpa.

it seems that pharmacy schools dont care for ms degrees. most only take your prepharm requirements into consideration. sure, ms is a bonus, but the first thing they look at is your prepharm gpa.

if i could take it back, i would forget about the m.s. degree and retake all my prepharm classes.

My undergrad GPA was 3.28, so I decided to apply to school that only consider my pre-pharm curriculum GPA, which works out better for me because I have no science classes at all on my transcript. You may want to consider doing that, that way you have a better shot at getting in, but you never stated what your pre-pharm GPA was....that's just my 2cents.

tootoo, could you list the schools you applied to? the ones that only look at pre-pharm GPA.

Thanks

The only school that I researched because I live in New Orleans is Xavier University, there admission is strictly on Pre-Pharm Curriculum and Science/Math GPA. They don't require the PCAT and just three letters of recommendations.

If you have at least 2.5 cummulative GPA and PCAT score of at least 50%, I encourage you to apply to Sullivan University in Kentucky. If you repeat classes and do well on them, you would probably have a good chance. Check out sullivan.edu. If you did badly in school before and do well on repeated classes.....don't give up okay? They require 2 letters of recommendation, application is easy to fill out, PCAT score at least 50%, cumm GPA at least 2.5, one of the schools to consider is Sullivan University. hope the information helps. good luck
