Hello everyone! I'm currently applying for hematology-oncology fellowship as an IMG from a Caribbean medical school, no visa required. I am currently in an academic-affiliated community hospital, have good STEP/ITE's scores and strong letters of recommendation. However, my research experience is limited. I'm eager to hear from others who have navigated a similar path:

  • What are the prospects like for IMGs in hematology-oncology fellowships?
  • How much does research experience impact the application process?
  • Any tips for standing out in applications with my background?
Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

1. Matching would be harder than someone who graduated from US Med school but not impossible. Plenty of programs in NY, MI, PA, OH who use IMGs to fill unfilled spots
2. If you want to get into academia then research is needed. IF community, they would still expect you to publish case reports etc so your resume stands out
3. Do a chief year and if still unmatched, maybe a year of pall care fellowship.
