Haven't posted in years on this website! How much research is needed for Heme/onc? I have about 17-20 research experiences on ERAS but I am wondering if I should I include the pending publications too. What are my chances? I am considering applying to 20-30 programs coming from a community program.

Need more info:

1. Quality of research: posters, case reports etc
2. AMG or IMG
3. Applying to what type of programs? Aim to goto academics? Research? Community practice?
4. In my opinion if the pending publication is a major research project then its worth mentioning, wouldn't mention a case report submitted to an IF 2.5 journal pending approval

That's about 13-15 more research experiences than I had

About 3 publications, rest are case reports and QI and posters.
AMG in community program
Most are community and academics very few programs are community-based.

Research is overhyped. The 3 things that make up 95% of an application is AMG, perceived strength of residency program, perceived strength of medical school.

The other 5% is some combo of letters, research, step scores (although now its pass fail), and etc.

I think for a Mid Tier program you have enough, for AMG even, would apply 40-50 programs to be safe.

Is the DO bias still there in fellowship? That’s something that’s also giving me anxiety. My program is a new community program but they have some in house fellowships.

Honestly probably depends on the program. If you take a look at a lot of the upper/upper mid program fellowship rosters, you won't find many DOs. At my program, I know of at least 2 attendings (old and old school) who have significant bias against DOs.

Step Scores, Letters and Research (if legit) matter a bit more than that IMO - and I've been at rank list meetings - but I agree it's all important. AMG isn't as big of a deal at some programs our field is pretty IMG friendly compared to other IM fellowships.

I agree DO still has a penalty although I would bet this is program dependent. I imagine there are "less prestigious" programs who see DOs as a chance to grab an excellent fellow that bigger programs might miss out on.
