Hi I am a fourth year medical student applying for anesthesiology residency. I just found out that I am a positive Hep B carrier ( what a horrible news). I was wondering how it would impact my chances of getting into residency. More importantly, i was wondering how it impact me when going thru residency, future practice etc... Thx

How would anyone ever know, unless you told them?

Don't bleed on your patients, and the transmission risk is 0.

PGG is right. I knew a doc who contracted Hep C in the OR from a patient. Multiple people saw the accidental stick, and knew the patients Hep C status. Two weeks later, s/he turned yellow, then took a few sick days. After that, nothing changed. It wasn't a secret, and it wasn't discussed. Just don't bleed on people. If you do though, you should probably inform them of the transmission risk.
