Here’s a little exercise/reminder about how “poorly” medicine pays.

Go there and put in the “plithy” salary of even a resident in there and realize how well they do relative to everyone else, even in big cities. Not saying the money isn’t well earned, but maybe it will just give some of you all some perspective on how “others” are doing.

I don't feel that Doctors are rich. Professional sports athletes and rappers, they are the rich ones when it comes to the materialistic sense.

It’s important to remain humble and reflect on how great the job really is.
You can make money in many fields with luck, planning, hard work, and/or good timing, but medicine is a guaranteed financial success for even the below average physician.
I have a friend who started out as a college drop out doing drywall to pay the rent. Now his building company is quite successful and his boat costs more than my house, and I’ve got a pretty nice crib. But the average college drop out who takes a non union drywall job to pay the rent isn’t joining the yacht club, ever.

Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?

Everyone will have their own conceived ideas of what it means to be rich. To me it means being able to buy whatever you want whenever you want without having to worry about money. Doctors are wealthy, they have the luxury of living a very nice life, but they must still be conscientious about what they buy.

The most accurate statement on SDN at this moment.

Legit though, I have this dream where I buy a yacht and I sail around the world to different countries and the countries let me stay in port for free and give me a food and transport allowance if I provide free care to citizens in the coastal towns. Dream crushed.

That's a pretty cool dream. It will be hard to paddle your Jon boat from America to the middle east +pity+

I mean, have you ever been to/lived in the neighborhoods that these sports athletes and rappers live in? Most of their neighbors are doctors, dentists, lawyers and pharmacists. Also most professional athletes only end up playing for about 3 years for around 500k.

Yea I actually have due to a neurosurgeon friend. But I have yet to see a PCP living in that type of neighborhood. So I don’t think is fair to categorize doctors all under one branch when talking of wealth. Also a close friend of mine is the running back for the TITANS and he had a like 5.2 million contract for 3 years.

The only people that are on that level are the Bezos’, Zuckerbergs and Bill Gates of the world. Even superstar athletes that make hundreds of millions of dollars going broke just from “not having to buy something and not worry about it”.

That’s because the PCPs that make that type of money live out on a ranch in the sticks. Also why capitalize “Titans” as if they’re in some way terrible? Also that’s the money for the guys that start on Sunday. Most of the players on those teams earn the league minimum.

People talk about salary to equate wealth all the time. It obviously matters but the biggest indicator I've seen is family. Have 3 kids and a stay at home parent and you're going to struggle to not worry about money. Live single and 50k is basically 100k. Get married, dont have kids and have both people in the relationship work careers and you'll be able to retire at 40 (if we assume you're both physicians and its sdn so most people do).

Also if you're not putting cash into non returning things like rent and kids, you're gonna grow net worth significantly more.

Oh, forgot to mention a general surgeon and their significant other who is a hospitalist, are pretty set with wealth. They also have no kids

You are raising your kids wrong, you’ve gotta sign a contract with them to yield 8% returns on their lifetime earnings. Gotta get your money back from your kids plus interest.

*is joke. Kids aren’t a financial investment.*

The core of your post is truth. Before I had my daughter, I somehow paid all of my bills saved around $500 per month and went on a backpacking trip every weekend plus a few vacations here in there on Like less than 3500 a month.

kids are about 250k each to raise and each family has about 2 of them. A vasectomy is about 600 bucks. If money matters you can get an 83,333.33% return if you get the latter.

Edit: I checked and your kid needs to make 3.3 million ish throughout their life for your 8% contract to break even. In case it wasn't obvious I'm not family orientated.

Since cost of luxury / dreams being discussed.....
A Friend of mine has a 46ft boat with two cabins. I don’t know much about boats / yachts or what makes them truly ocean-crossing capable. New this boat is about $1.25M, and uses about 3gallons of diesel per mile. So, just crossing the Atlantic will cost >$30k for fuel.

Piracy can offset fuel cost if you plan your route in conjunction with shipping lines.

Pirate-doctors: now, there's a business model I haven't heard of yet.
There are a few pirate festivals near where I work every year. I’ve been trying to convince my hospital CEO to let me dress up our mobile urgent care as a giant pirate ship, dress up as a pirate doctor, and sail it into the midst of them to see pirate patients. No luck thus far.

How much would you commit to the bit? Would you be giving patients oranges to prevent scurvy, give out gins and tonics to ward off malaria? Handing out hooks and peg legs to the MVCs?

This is great. When I worked as a vet tech for my aunts ED we rented a 100 ft trailer and decorated it as a pirate Charlie Brown float and made fake stuffed animals walk the plank and dropped them to children in the crowd Lol. I don’t think it brought us any business but it was cute.

I guess children are why doctors feel they don’t make any money. Since so many of them have kids before they make “attending money” and then all that extra money is just going to private school tuition, piano lessons, ballet, and all that rich stuff. But at least they can take care of the children, I found this video pretty telling on how most people don’t really take into consideration how much kids make you poor.

I know I have a new born and I am debating on getting snipped. I didn’t even want kids but my ole lady got me drunk. Smh. Gotta stay away from that fire water.

Edit: Now that I have my daughter I wouldn’t trade her for the world.

Got snipped before anyone had the chance to get me drunk, so much peace of mind.

Realized how bad it sounded to say huh 😉? If you’re a guy you can always wait till you’re much older to have kids, but then who are you going to date?

After shadowing during like 30 vasectomies...I don't think that I could go through it. The veil has been lifted, and what lies beyond is not pretty.

Agreed. Implants and IUDs work about as well anyway.

Lol I did half way through writing it. So I just continued typing it and made that edit comment before even posting the actual comment. Haha. Its the equivalent of when doing a chart I just finish typing and go back and make an addendum lmfao.

Don't u think it's a bit unfair that women have to bear the burden of birth control?

By the time I get to attending Salary, my daughter will be about to enter high school or tail end of middle school....She is getting mac and Cheese and maybe one sport. Who needs rich stuff....?
I went to a super competitive HS where kids did a million activities. It's honestly better for kids not to do that. Why be busier than your parents going to school for 7 hrs a day, then sports for 3 hours, then come home and do 3 hrs of HW, and then shower_dinner_ bed at midnight and get up at 6 to catch the bus?
Better save up that attending salary to pay for your babygirl's college! 😉
Edit: I get that this was a joke I'm just making a general observation.

It’s not my fault that they haven’t come up with a form of male birth control that isn’t terrible.

Not only that, but when it does come out. It is exogenous testosterone. Legal anabolic steroids.

So you know what I'm going to do? I'm gonna abuse it!

And it will be easy to get--"yo doc, my girl don't wanna get pregnant, can I get some of dat legal steroids", Doc: "sure, here you go".

Here's what I'd do:

Go 3 months without it or reduce dose for 3 months. Save the rest.

Then I'll have a 3 month supply--take it all in a 1.5 month period, high doses, lift weights, and then...repeat.

I'll see Y'all at the Olympia.

If we as a pro-choice society have decided that the decision to have a child is fully on the woman to have or rid herself of, then shouldn’t the ‘burden of birth control’ fall on the one who has the ultimate decision in pregnancy or not?
a famous comedian said the following recently.

IF women get to choose to abort the fetus with impunity, why can't I choose to abandon the child with impunity?
Great Question!

This thread is talking about how poor doctors are paid relatively, to a bunch of premeds who would do this for free..

Man, I made some ramen the other day and threw a can of tuna in there and called it good. This was just for me not my daughter (I try to give her the best food I can) but man....the budget is real,

I've always kind of wondered this about you. Going into medicine will be tough on your family. And you've even said that you sincerely hate route memorization (which is important in first two years of medical school). So what is it exactly that is attracting you to medicine so much despite the high stakes?

I mean, if you wanna draw some connections between a college student eating ramen and existential questionings about my purpose being here, feel free to PM those specific concerns.
