So one of my top programs has both categorical and advanced spots. For the categorical matches, half of the intern year is spent at a community hospital that is extremely underwhelming (I interviewed there separately for the trans year and was very disapointed), so I'd rather just match to the advanced spots and get a TY elsewhere. The problem: I don't have very many TY programs and I'm worried about not getting one.

My question is, if I rank the advanced spots first, categorical spots next, but strike out on my supplemental list for PGY1 programs, will the match move me to the next program on the main list (in this case, the categorical spot at the same program), or will it just force me to scramble for a PGY1 spot? Any thoughts?

the computer ranks you at the advanced program and forces you to scramble for PGY-1...basically cuz it's a computer and doesn't understand that your next program is the same with a PGY included....i'm having the same dilemma....i'm thinking i'll go categorical first...how bad can 6month spread out over a year really suck? not worse than a general surgery year right?....
