I recently read that 1 in 5 people in the United States have (genital) herpes. Even crazier, a majority of carriers show no symptoms and don't even know they have it.

Being as this virus is so common and often asymptomatic, I decided to get checked out for both oral and genital herpes. As I wait for the results, I began to wonder if this is something that would alter my career as a dentist.

If the test is positive, will this be something dental schools will have to know about? When dealing with patients, will this be something I would have to disclose? Obviously this isn't something as serious as HIV, but I would still like some input.

Thanks!

Hahahaha, why in the world would you think that's something you have to disclose?

1.) It is basically just an aesthetic STD, it doesn't really have any health affects other than appearance.

2.) I don't think your patients are going to be anywhere near your junk so....

3.) I think you already know this, but just in case you don't, it won't transfer through blood... it does have a slight shedding rate during periods of non-breakouts, but even then it requires physical contact with the region to spread.
