Biochem- Currently enrolled for fall 2016.

I took bio I, psych, physics and English all together my first semester...I had a really troublesome time, as I was battling major depression and was not doing well in my classes, as you guys can clearly see. I need to take three more classes, they are biochem and physics 1/2. I have an upward trend, and raised my 1.4 to 3.0 as of now without grade replacement. My major gpa is a 3.7 (Doubt it matter though) I have a year left in undergrad. Should I start looking at SMP's. Will my sgpa be a lot higher with grade replacement? ( I hope so 🙁 ). Thank you so much guys. What should I do, I' am feeling a little lost at the moment in my life. I really want this and know exactly how to study for the MCAT, can anyone suggest when I should start studying for it though?

my stats are similar to yours, I was told by people on this forum that if we can do well on MCAT, we have a shot at DO's for sure. Our grades in everything are above "C." Start looking at post-bacs or smps if you dont perform well in your remaining classes. But yea, can someone else chime in on this?

Do whatever you can to get your gpa (especially sgpa) as high as possible and maintain the upward trend. The trend matters but so does the overall ugpa.

Retake F's/D's if possible to boost your s/cgpa. How you get the retakes doesn't matter, just do well in them. DO has grade forgiveness and retakes if low grades do a lot (B-'s not too much), so you really don't need to do a SMP or such.

Get above a ~3.25 (a 3.45 even better) and do well on the MCAT (504+) and you will have a strong chance for next cycle. Start studying for the MCAT in the spring after Biochem and take it only after you are ready.

Take a look at the AACOM MCIB for avgs.

Best of Luck

Thank you so much for replying to me! You have given me some hope, it will be very hard for me to raise it above a 3.25 at this stage I think, since I have only a year left. But I'am not sure if that will change with grade replacements. Without grade replacement, my cgpa is 3.08. I'am not sure what sgpa looks like with grade replacement. Is there a website or resource where I can see what my gpa/grades will come out to with grade replacement? Thanks a bunch! Also, if I do not reach the 3.45 gpa by the time I graduate, what do you suggest I do? Should I just continue to take upper level courses after graduating, or SMP? 🙂

Oh nice! We have to crush the MCAT!

Yes, one is available on sdn do some digging for it. Id better with retakes ur GPA will be much better. Get above a 3.25 and you have a shot if you do well on MCAT. SMPs can be a dream killer do some reading about such.

What is your sGPA? your retake in Bio from an F to B+ will raise your cGPA and sGPA a decent amount
I just calculated my sGPA using the calculator tool I found on SDN thanks to DrMikeP. It is currently a 3.08 There is this course (Orgo. 1 Lab, I have one C in, it was 2.5 credits...and I dont know why my school separated it from the lecture grade, so im sure it counts towards sci. gpa...its really hurting me...) It would be at a 3.2 if it was not separate..is it like this for others as well?If I can get A's in the rest of courses (4 more courses left- bio2, biochem, physics 1/2) then it will be around 3.5. However, I am very scared of physics, sigh. What do you think man? 🙁

Depends on your MCAT. If you do well, it's worth a cycle. If you do average, SMP time.

Agree with Mad Jack, retake that class and get your sGPA to above 3.2 and aim for a 505 MCAT and you will have a shot. Do well in your remaining classes to get the GPA even higher, ideally as high as you possibly can.

I want to retake the lab portion only for orgo 1, but I cant seem to find schools that have it as separate. I was just looking into the UNE classes online, and they have it, Should I retake it online there? Will this be looked down upon?

Financially, you can save a lot of money just retaking some of those classes. I'd definitely go that route, plus it's also great MCAT prep

And do everything in your power to get an A in biochem. One of the hardest classes, but seeing you succeed in it will garner some good attention from schools

which ones do you think I should retake besides the obvious Physics I? Is it smart to retake a B-? I was thinking of taking microbio from the UNE online classes the summer after I graduate, is this a good idea?

If you have the time necessary and money to re-take a B- then personally, I'd go for it. If you don't then you should be fine, just aim to ace the rest of your classes. However, I'd strongly reconsider re-taking Orgo I. If you're gonna take the same class over again and you're considering which to choose, it looks best to take the more challenging ones

I don't have any experience with online bio classes (all mine were in person) but I'm sure several other posters here do

SMP's are useless if you are planning to solely apply to osteopathic medical schools. You are much better off retaking courses until your GPA's are high enough, and getting an acceptable score on the MCAT.

It is 1) cheaper to do this than spending a fortune on an SMP, and 2) you are more likely to achieve A's in retaken courses than you are when you take medical school level courses in an SMP.

The only time where an SMP is recommended for someone who is only interested in DO schools is if he/she has taken so many credits that it would take absolutely forever to raise his/her GPA's, even with retakes.

Retake any C possible, since you had it in class I'd retake the lab online if I had to. That bump would help a lot. You can make As in the rest. The key to physics is practice. It's a math class so do as many problems as possible. You got this, stop worrying about SMP right now, if you were below 2.9 maybe but you aren't. Make As and a good mcat and ur in.
