Hey guys..
so here the situation.. I have this pre med student rotating with me in the ER. He has an average GPA, I think it is somewhere in the ball park of 3.4 but he is not having a great semester. He has informed me that he is not the greatest test taker but this kid is brilliant from what I have seen. He absorbs knowledge like anything ..I guess he just has serious nerves when it comes to tests. Anyway.. he really wants to become a doctor and he asked me for schools in the carribbean which are certainties even if he has a low MCAT.. I am not to familiar with many carib med schools besides Ross and St Georges..can any one help me out here...what schools can I tell him will almost certainly give him a shot with low MCATs or no MCATS at all.. ?? Appreciate the help guys thanks..

I am no experrt on Caribbean schools but if he is worried about the MCAT but has a decent 3.3+ GPA then SABA would be a good bet and I am sure that if he is a well-rounded person then he should have a decent chance at any of the schools (including the three older ones).

A word of caution. The MCAT is rumoured to be an indicator of how you will do in the big exams during and after med school. These big exams determine what residency you will qualify for, so learning to take tests well is a beneficial skill.

He should take the MCAT. Period. Tell him to bite the bullet, tough it out, and to take a really good prep course (e.g., Princeton, Kaplan, etc.). He's premed. Tell him to work on his grades. Consider an MS to get his GPA up. Carib schools are a "last resort" option. I think it would turn out okay if he went to one, but that's the honest truth. Exhaust all other resources first.

I agree with SI. Tell him not to shoot himself in the foot, and just take the test. Also tell him that as a physician in training, you gotta "love" taking them tests. 🙄 It does not stop at the 'CAT. He still has step 1, step 2cs, step 2ck, step 3, and The specialty exams, to go through.....

Good Luck
