Hey Nova's dean Tim Hottel, came to East carolina to interview for the new dental school dean position. Why's he wanting to leave?

Really? I've been trying to find out any information about who is interviewing, but it has been pretty hush hush around here (ecu). Does anybody know of any others interviewing for the dean position?

ahhhh...ecu...new dental school....exciting! i was begginning to think they had tossed the whole ecu dental school thing since i hadnt heard/seen anything about it in a while.

why does is say that it increases the class size of UNC Chapel Hill? uhhh are the students gona get joint UNC-ECU degrees? 😕

I dont get how the whole joint program thing works....

I do like how the 4th year students have to work in undeserved/rural areas.

UNC, NCSU, ASU, ECU, UNCC are all classified under the University of NC system. Makes it easy to transfer from one school to another. ECU pushed for the SOD to help provide dental health to counties lacking dentists. UNC voiced that if ECU was to get a dental school then they needed money from the state also to increase class size to help too.

Not a joint class effort

I know they are all under the UNC System because I am from NC and go to one of the schools under the UNC system. However there is a difference between the UNC System and UNC-Chapel Hill. The link specifically says it will increase the class size of UNC-CHAPEL HILL SOD as in UNC-Chapel Hill the university ..not UNC the university-school system as a whole.

So, still...hmmm I don't get how this is a joint program that increases the size of UNC-Chapel Hill's dentistry class...

hmmmmm....

The joint effort brings ~100mil to UNC for renovation and expansion. The class size will increase from ~82 to 100. ECU receives 85mil to build and start its first class of 40-50 students in 2011, however applications will be available a cycle early (summer 2009). Meaning they may start accepting applicants a year early??? Not sure. ECU's school will be set up similar to Arizona's school (A.T. Still).

I think its great that one can apply early! especially if they [adcom] actually make their decisions on acceptances early as well. Meaning you know a year ahead whether you are accepted and that can be a comfort knowing you have that acceptance and can spend a year on whatever (work, travel etc).

I am really excited about this.... this ECU dental school program seems pretty cool (especially 4th year program).

Yeah it's exciting and they're getting a lot of support from area dentists. I'm applying this year, but I'd almost rather wait for ECU. It's going to be very strong clinically. By practicing in rural/underserved areas you should see plenty of different cases, so you will definitely be ready for private practice after school. It's perfect for anyone wanting to go into general/peds. However, if you want to specialize or do research, you may want to go to UNC.
