Hey- Where should YOU live?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Bestplaces is key if you're moving to an unfamiliar city, especially a large one. When I moved to Los Angeles, I had no idea what places were safe and what were not. Sites like best places will give you crime statistics, median income, and demographics for every single city, and it will help you settle in an area more suited to your needs.

haha, my top was new haven . . .

but, yale just ain't got what i'm looking for . . .

and very few other cities have EM training programs

mountains, whitewater, mountains, and good seafood . . . all i need baby

And mountains?

Hmmm... Boston, D.C, NY, and Chicago 1-4. Can't say (all of) those would have been at the top of a list I made... but hey... I'm pretty open to change.😀

Wow, I suck:

1. El Paso, TX
2. Charleston, SC
3. August, GA
4. Oklahoma City
5. Jacksonville
6. Tucson

I guess checking "strongly disagree" to the symphony and ballet boxes banished me from all of the cultural centers.

Hey, cool, aren't you already in Texas? 🙂

I like symphonies, etc, so I got:

1. Los Angeles, CA
2. San Francisco, CA
3. Washington, DC
4. San Diego, CA
5. Seattle, WA
6. Boston, NY
7. New York, NY
8. Pittsburgh, PA
9. Atlanta, GA
10. Denver, CO

7/10 of these cities host programs I applied to. I also applied to a lot of Philly and Chicago programs, but those cities are lower on the list, not sure why? 😕

Haha, here is another website that gave me the following results:

1) Atlanta
2) Chicago
3) Philadelphia
4) Honolulu, HI
5) New York, NY

I love America 😍

Frdericksburg, TX
Kerrville, TX
Eufaula, AL
Hopkinsville, KY
St Marys, GA
Clarksdale, MS

I agree that I like the top two, I have certainly visited both. I am from TX and in MS now... I will have to look up this Clarksdale place and go check it out one weekend....

Hancock-Houghton, MI
Wenatchee, WA
Spearfish, SD
Bremerton, WA
Traverse City, MI
Dillon, MT

And I live in Miami. Perhaps there's a touch of cognitive dissonance?

I really do like smaller mountain towns, so it isn't all wrong.

If you're looking for mountains and seafood, you'll probably end up with mountain oysters

I did get fooled into eating at least 20 of em when I was 7 or 8. So good until the horrible truth was revealed.

I'm a great outdoor activities enthusiast 😎
I plugged in my interests and ran the program on the site.
Ended up with places in Montana, Washington, Alaska among others.
Filtered them all out and in the 4 pages of places (about 25) ended up with 3 places with EM residencies: Salt Lake City, Denver, and Albany, NY - so there....works pretty well for me 😀

mountains oysters? whats that? . . .

you mean sheep nizzles . . . mm mm mmmmm . . . they'rrrrrrrre GREAT!

Three months a year, Seattle is bar none the best city in America. Can't beat mountains and water on two sides, incredible downtown and a trend setter in all things except EM. Just the thought of wild PACIFIC salmon and dungeness crab make my mouth water.

In one weekend you can scuba for crabs, hike a rainforest, sea kayak with Orcas and telemark an 11,000 peak. Wow!

But no EM programs and nine months of wet, cold darkness, not to mention the traffic and cost of living 🙁.

Maybe someday I'll figure out how to work in Seattle for the summer and San Diego or Florida for the Winter - with pit stops in Colorado or Utah for skiing.👍

Yeah, it picked my home town as my top choice:
Seattle!
It just confirms that I'm going back!

My wife is from Houghton and talk about small town. You must have said that you like the cold too. 10+ feet of snow a year. No one bats an eye after 14 or 16 inches overnight.

I interviewed for a job there. The guy interviewing me, during a quick tour around town, made the mistake of pointing out the marker on the highway that shows the record snowfall. It was like 28' off the ground. I liked the town and loved the hospital, but that was a bit much.

I said that I didn't mind some cold. I definitely didn't say I wanted 16 inches a night, That one's strange, because it's the outlier. The others are a little closer to my style. 😉

This, and every other poll seems to think that the Northeast is THE place to live, and you have to deselect it (at least I do) to not have the top 50 all be suburbs of New BostonYork.
Even if you select hot/humid/no snow/no assclowns.

no assclowns.

Not so keen on the unfriendly people, huh? I've lived all over, big and small, hot and cold, and I'm pretty sure there have been ass clowns everywhere I've lived...

It's all a matter of proportion🙄

Assclowns aren't unfriendly. Assclowns are people who look down on you because of where you are from. It happens commonly to those of us from The South when we travel up north. It happens the same for those from the north who go to the south. For some reason people seem to think you can't escape your surroundings.

1. LA
2. SF
3. Seattle
4. San Diego
5. Orange County, CA

Utter crap. I grew up in OC and went to undergrad in SD. You couldn't threaten me enough to make me go back to So Cal. Sacramento, which I really liked, was #10 and Vegas which is great was #18. Too bad this poll is binding and I now have to move to LA within 30 days. What? You guys didn't know that?

65% New York City

60% Atlanta

60% Washington, DC

50% Boston

50% Chicago

Considering i'm from chicago and applying to a whole ton of NYC, DC, and Boston programs, sounds like it did a good job...

1. Fort Collins, CO
2. Missoula, MT
3. Odgen, UT
4. Provo-Orem, UT
5. Idaho Falls, ID

..... are you serious?! I love the number one choice, but two in UT? I cant deal with the LDS people, they piss me off too much. I've been to Salt Lake, and it was ok, I actually kind of liked the town, but I dunno... I could probably live in CO, maybe somewhere kinda outside of Denver. I really loved every bit of Lake Tahoe, CA, but not only are there not any schools there, there are no hospitals either. Suck. I guess I'll just stay here in Applachia for all my learning. As long as they'll let me into Uof Cincinnatti so I can go with the flight team. Thats my dream...

I can understand that... I usually claim TX as my home state (I've been here the most) and we're all hat-wearing, gun-toting, belt-buckle-sporting rednecks... ummmm... y'all.😀

I actually had someone from NY tell me that. I thought it was pretty funny. I'm about the most non-stereotyped version too. No accent, no truck, no belt buckle (although I've thought about getting one just for kicks...)

Lol. Thats funny. I'm from Tennessee, and well, I get that crap all the time too. I do have a buckle and a hat and some boots by the way. I much rather walking around without shoes though most of the time😎
