Hello Everyone,

I wanted to make a thread for the 2018 HHMI medical research fellowship. Please feel free to post if you’ve applied, and especially when you hear news of decisions in March!

I just uploaded my application and cannot wait to hear back.

Thanks!

Also, I have questions for previous fellows!

If accepted:
1. How do you collect the living expenses stipend (monthly, weekly, in one big chunk?)
2. What insurance do you get with the $5,500 designated for health?
3. How many candidates apply each year/how many accepted?
4. How do you apply for a second year?
5. Where do you present at the end of the year?
6. What residency will you pursue (research, postdoc, or nonresearch?)
7. How many people use the HHMI just to get into their choice residency and not to advance a research career?

Thanks!

Yea I applied as well. We should hear back by Friday, right?

1. How do you collect the living expenses stipend (monthly, weekly, in one big chunk?)
  • It depends on how your particular institution decides to give it. From what I recall, mine was biweekly if only because that's just how the department I was working in does it.
2. What insurance do you get with the $5,500 designated for health?
  • I can't comment on this because I was still under my mothers plan at the time (<26 y/o). If this is the case for anyone, you can get it partially reimbursed if you can show how much of your parent's total plan is dedicated to you. You can talk to the coordinator about it. I expect that you can choose whatever health plan fancies you and just get $5,500 of it reimbursed, if it even costs that much.
3. How many candidates apply each year/how many accepted?
  • From what I recall, about 60+ get accepted out of a pool of maybe about 200? It's a pretty decent number so ya'll have a good chance!
4. How do you apply for a second year?
  • Get accepted for 1 year first, show dedication and deliverables, apply for a 2nd year. Would also talk to the coordinator maybe halfway through to hammer out the deetz.
5. Where do you present at the end of the year?
  • It may depend, but my year we presented at the AAP/ASCI/APSA Joint Meeting.
6. What residency will you pursue (research, postdoc, or nonresearch?)
  • Will also depend on your interests. The world is your oyster.
7. How many people use the HHMI just to get into their choice residency and not to advance a research career?
  • Not many I believe. Most have shown dedication to research, ability to vet the scientific method, and ability to write coherently. As you know, the application isn't easy and it's a self-selecting crowd. This is not to say everyone will be PI of their own lab in the future, but I'd bet my money that the vast majority will go on to perform research during residency and beyond.

Also applied! I believe results should be out at midnight EST based on previous threads? Anxiously waiting now

Haven't heard anything...hoping it's just being sent later this year. Good luck to you all!

Rejection email received at 10:23AM EST. Congrats to everyone that got in!

hi guys congrats to everyone who got in! I'm considering applying to this next year - is the HHMI mainly for basic science inclined folks? Or can you find more data science / programming driven clinical projects?

I'd say the emphasis is on hardcore basic science projects. I am sure there are computational projects in this realm. However, to my knowledge they do not approve of clinical projects. 🙂

"Area of Research. During the fellowship year, fellows must be engaged full-time in basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. Eligible fields include the following:
  • Biochemistry
  • Bioinformatics1
  • Biophysics
  • Biostatistics
  • Cell biology
  • Developmental biology
  • Epidemiology2
  • Genetics
  • Immunology
  • Mathematical and computational biology
  • Microbiology
  • Molecular biology
  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology
  • Structural biology
  • Virology

1. For purposes of fellowship eligibility, health services research, such as computerized diagnosis or treatment algorithms, is not included in bioinformatics
2. Research directed toward an understanding of biological factors relevant to disease distribution in populations or of associations with biological factors that may suggest causal influence and/or prevention strategies."

For those of you who were accepted - congratulations. How many of you had PIs that were under the recommended mentors page? I have identified a PI at my home institution I'd like to work with, but they are not associated with the HHMI. However, they are an established PI with multiple grants + a track record of training two grad students. I would be the first medical student they have had. I know the HHMI application considers the student's chosen mentor in the selection process, but I am unsure how many of the fellowship winners are actually working with HHMI-associated faculty.

According to this, 13 out of 66 are working with HHMI investigators. So the vast majority are not working in HHMI labs.

Does anyone have more information about the kick-off meeting's itinerary in Boston this Sept?

Oh shoot! They're suspending the program. Looks like we'll be the last Fellows.

Yeah, it's a real bummer. I wonder if too many former med fellows were bailing out of science and just doing clinical work.

What happened? Is this suspension indefinite?

Official statement:

"As we celebrate the individual successes of the current and past Med Fellows, it is also important to take a careful look at our initiatives to ensure that they are well aligned with HHMI’s strategic priorities, and that the program design allows for the effective pursuit of those priorities. This means that, from time to time, we must make tough decisions about where to invest limited resources.

After considerable analysis, we have come to the difficult decision to suspend indefinitely the HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program after this year. You, as a member of the current class of 52 first-year and 14 second-year Fellows, will not be affected; your research year will continue as planned. In addition, current first-year Fellows will be eligible to apply for a second year of support in 2019. However, we will not initiate a new competition in the fall of 2018.

HHMI believes in the important role of physician scientists, and we will continue to examine ways by which we can support the successful development of physician scientists."

What a bummer! I was really excited to apply to this program in the future 🙁

Darn.... there goes my plans.... Anyone familiar with similar programs?
