HHMI undergrad research

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is not an HHMI program, per se, but rather how your school is using HHMI funds to promote biomedical research. Usually schools have structured programs such as the one you've described in order to breed "HHMI Scholars," who will hopefully pursue a medical/research combined career.

That said, I'm finishing my second HHMI stint and neither was part of a long-term program such as this. There are other alternatives available but HHMI is a well respected organization. You might do well to try for the position, even if you don't know where you'll end up down the road. Good luck!

Looks good to me. Med schools like to see research experience, even if you're not going for MD/PhD, and this looks like a pretty prestigious program, so I think this would give you an advantage.

Doing research in the summer and studying for the MCAT is fine, as long as you learn the material thoroughly in your first and second year classes (i.e. you don't need to learn the basic physics, bio, or chem for the first time). Taking an entire summer off to study for the MCAT is unnecessary and WILL disadvantage you because that summer will essentially be empty on your application.

That depends on your schedule and personal characteristics. Personally, I put a LOT into my research and it's pretty fatiguing. I wouldn't have the energy to put everything into MCAT studying and full-time research at the same time.

I took a full summer to study for the MCAT, but i did manage to fit in some research and volunteering on a very part-time basis.
