Hi Guys! Very simple question from a beginner

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
its worse than an A- but better than a B. i'd say overall it wont make or break your dental school chances =)

It was hard to manage the study time for the cal class, am doing a chemistry major and wanted to get an A in my main class... I just hope is not a big deal a B+ man 🙁

Bahaha....sorry. You're fine. Quit obsessing. What is your overall gpa and your sci gpa? THAT's what really matters.

I currently have a 3.8 sGPA and a 3.3 overall... Also, hating electives to the moment 😀

You are fine. Just move on, and shoot for A's next semester.

LOL...chill man, everything is OK!!! My GPA is way worse than yours' (sciGPA - 3.32) and I've had 3 interviews and 2 acceptances already. Contrary to what many think on this forum, you do NOT have to have a 4.0 to get into dental school. It's more about your overall application, and how you stand out amongst others with great numbers. Heck, I probably couldn't get a D in Cal II...just telling the truth. I've heard that class is ridiculously hard...so cheers, go celebrate the B+. Happy Holidays!

Thank you for that message man, its quit inspiring 😀 I managed to get an A+ in Cal 1 but missed it in Cal 2 by an inch. I think ill be good... i want to go to BU and i am Hispanic (from cuba) so i hope that also gives me a little advantage, i have heard it DOES! Also, some out of the ordinary extracurricular activities like a Pilot License which i hope it helps!
Thank you Man!

Anytime...and yes being Hispanic gives you an advantage. Your grades indicate that you really don't need any preference though, which to me personally is more respectable. I am a huge opponent against someone's race putting them at the front of the line. But you have proven that you can do it without pulling the race card, so congrats to you for that. Don't sweat a B+ bro, people get in with D's and even some F's on their transcripts. Try to make all A's & B's with the majority of them being A's and you'll be set to go, a slip up every once in a while (getting a B) will not hurt you badly at all. 😀

And if you keep that GPA and have decent DAT scores (20+) you will easily get into BU. I think they're one of the schools that like more diversity, with respect to race. Just keep up the great work and you're set to go.

I got a B+ in calc 2 and have been accepted to two very quality schools. You'll be fine.

Yeah i personally think race shouldn't be a factor! Even though if you were part of a minority you would probably be happy to hear that small advantage, but i do not mean to use it as an excuse, maybe i mean it due to the fact that i will relate to the people that are closer to my culture. I truly appreciate all your advices... Thank you

to make you feel better all the A+ that you got will count as 4.33 not a 4.0

and they will make up for your B+ which would be a 3.3 for you. lucky you.

Hey of course...please do not take what I said the wrong way. I think it's really important to have minorities in our field (for obvious reasons that you've stated). But stellar students like yourself should be selected to fill the "minority slots" instead of just letting someone in because of race alone. I live in Mississippi and they are letting minorities in with crazy low scores right now (from the mouths of people who sit on adcoms). Minorities are fully capable of pulling the load, some of the most intelligent people I've ever met were minorities. You get what I'm saying hopefully...anyways, you'll make it. Keep your head up and best of luck to you!

Also, I don't blame you one bit...use anything you can to your advantage!

Lol, scott,
i hope you dont assume that about them when you are sitting next to them, at the interview or in your classes. When you get accepted to mississippi.

If I can get accepted there...lol. Well, I just think that minorities are fully capable of scoring as high as everyone else, that's all. There are whites that don't belong in dental school either...so I can say it for my own race as well. I don't really think patients care what color the person is that's operating on them, they probably don't want people who made an 11 on their DAT though (of any race).

And no, I will not ASSUME anything about someone. It's not my job to discriminate on anyone because of their race...or anyone else's. However, it is the job of the admissions committee to put the safety and health of the public at the top of their priority list.

You would be surprised my friend...
I have talked to many race people, w/ varying different age groups. And Some of the things I heard them say were just unbelievable.

@Chemboy: No man i didn't get mad or anything, perhaps i got happy you mentioned my advantages i dnt really take in regard the disadvantages... I am with you 100% about the fact that w.e race is applying they have to deserve a slot... I think just because someones race they should eliminate a GPA margin of .4 or something. Wee all work hard to even get to put our names in a paper... We didnt work hard to be born on a different race where in this country is something that soon wont be a factor i think... by the time i apply it will probably be a disadvantage 😀 lol

Well, IMO...that's very sad that people still feel that way. I know from experience how well some of my "minority" classmates did, some even did a lot better than myself. I never labeled them as that because they were another brother/sister in my eyes...going through the same struggles I was. I guess idiots such as these will always be present in our society. It's very sad that it's about to be 2011 and all people can worry about (STILL) is race.
