High DAT Low GPA LOW BCP

Please help me with my chances.

I applied to 12 schools.

BCP GPA: 2.97
Science: 3.22
Non-Science: 3.39
Total: 3.27

I'm an engineering student, and I'm top 5 in my engineering class at a competitive university (top 10).
I did not spend much time to memorize the trivial facts in biology and did poorly in biology and organic chemistry, which required a lot of memorization.

Also, I was not serious about going into the health profession because I thought I could make a killing in engineering easily.

Now, after seeing the horrible job market in engineering, I am serious about going into dentistry, and I'm planning on taking all biology classes this coming fall to show schools that I can get A's in biology, I just need motivation.

My DAT scores were:

Bio: 18- the trivial facts totally got me again...
GC:25
OC:25
Math:25
RC:22
AA:23
TS:21
PA:23

5th in a class of 5 is still last place. if you really go to a top 10 school...highly doubt you'd be very competitive at that school.

that said, you might get in somewhere. dont expect that 'top 5/top 10' status to help you much. it's about numbers and yours are subpar

I'm not sure why these guys are ripping on you for your statement about your class rank. I am in a similar situation stats-wise. My GPA is a touch higher (3.3ish), and my DAT scores a touch lower (22). I can't tell you much about your odds, except to say I have gotten mostly positive feedback about my chances. So long as the other aspects of your application are strong, and you apply broadly, I would guess that you have an outside chance. I would be a bit nervous about that BCP GPA though...

This is irrelevant, but horrible job market in engineering? How so? 😵

I have about the same stats, except my DAT is a few points lower in about every catergory than yours, and I'm not stressing at all! And about your class rank, I would take being dead last at any dental school, as long as I am in a dental school! You'll get in somewhere 🙂

Well, I just look around. About 80% of engineering graduates are unemployed. My roommate who graduated with a 3.97 GPA in chemical engineering did not find a job. I have a 3.87 GPA in structural engineering, and I did not find a job. The 20% probably went into finance because we engineers are good at math.

BCP GPA is what I'm worried about. I screwed up in biology (got 3 C's) and that dragged my BCP down. I also scored the lowest on DAT Bio, I'm worried because it shows that I'm bad at memorizing details.

Where do you live? I haven't come across this (I'm an engineer currently). Sounds to me like your in it for the money....
Also, you claim a 3.8 in structural engineering yet you posted that you have a 3.2 total gpa (from aadsas?).. Is the 3.8 the gpa out of your engineering courses only or something?

True, calculations don't add up right.

What kind of engineer? It's pretty bad for structural because of the 2008 housing bubble. No one is building now. And yes 3.8 is classes from engineering school only. not counting basic sciences.

If you can make 150k out of college as an engineer, why would you spend another 4 years and 300k in student loans to become a dentist? I thought I could make a decent living as an engineer, but that's not the case, so I'm doing dentistry.

are you for real? 150k first year out? maybe mining/oil rigs in desolate locations. maybe. just maybe

I just spoke with the head of LSU Dental who pretty much ripped me apart for a 2.78 BCP. He noted that it was one of the top indicators they used to determine whether or not an applicant was competitive for an interview or not.

you can get into a D school with your stats!
But 'job market in engineering' ? You can get training and become Computer Network Engineer and make good salary !
