Hi, I'm a second year student. I had a couple questions while researching loupes. I have not treated my first patient in the clinic yet so I don't really know what my position in relation to the patient will be and things like that, so I am just doing research for now.

I read on this forum that if you get high magnification loupes, ultralight (featherlight) light is "not focused enough" to use with the loupes. (vs using a light that is designed for those loupes by the same company) Does anyone have any experience with this? Because I have ultralight on order right now, and thinking of going high magnification (3.3x-4.5x). I think it will be fine with 3.3x but maybe could see some problems with 3.8x-4.5x, I'm not sure exactly what kind of problems though.

Also, I am thinking of using a rigid headband mount instead of a frame, since I will have pretty heavy loupes and light as well. I can't stand pressure on my nose. I was wondering if you could shine more light on the disadvantages of using a rigid headband mount like this: http://www.meditec.zeiss.com/C125679E0051C774/ContentsWWWIntern/EA42109BEEEC1072C1257299004B7434

The ones I could think of are:

- looks "ridiculous"
- get in the way of communication with patient
- get in the way of perio exam, etc. (but I could just take them off or use my 2.5x, right?)
- some headbands (like orascoptic ones looks like it's a spongy material) might not be hygienic
- you can't hang it on your neck when not needed, you have to take them off or keep them on

If you could comment on these disadvantages or comment on your experience, that would be great.

I have used the featherlight with my high mag loupes and it's perfect - plenty bright enough.

Thanks, HupHolland!

Another question: do alot of prosthodontists use high mag (4.5+) like endodontists do?

I have not met a prosthodontist yet that wears high mag loupes. This is not to say that some don't, but it seems like more GPs wear em compared to prosthodontists.
