8 YUCK😱! The day after, I cried a lot and still feel bad. The questions I got wrong keep popping up in my head. Anyone else have the same experience? Anyone know they made a lot of mistakes but still did well? Thanks!

Thats like 2 percent of the exam. If you were solid on the rest of the exam you will still do exceptionally well. Head up.

i've yet to see 1 person who didn't report at least 10 "stupid" mistakes. everyone makes them. we're human, right? i've thought of no less than 20 questions that I missed outright since the exam (these are merely the ones I can recall), and my NBMEs were >260.

my # has been creeping up since the test - it was 8, 10 and now its upto 15 questions missed, out of which only 2 were tough ones that I figured out later. so 13 DUMB mistakes for sure.

The 5 weeks after my test I kept thinking of dumb mistakes that I had made, and was worried about my score. But I ended up doing good, so hopefully you'll do the same! Just think, the 10-20 questions you remember getting wrong are only a tiny percentage of the overall questions. 👍

Does anyone on this message board get <260?

nope.

although i'd be thrilled with anything over 240. i pretty much need it for my derm dreams not to die or at least be horribly hindered.

if you were to meet me in real life you'd never suspect my getting a 263. truly, i can't really account for it. i'm a goofball with no confidence in my knowledge of the material.

plus, the NBME is meaningless. the real truth is 7 days away. scary times.

I thought of all the questions that I figured I got wrong and then looked them up two days after the test. I guessed right on all 21 of them!

oh this probably isn't helping at all...

jk

Yesssssss!! Another potential competitor bites the dust. I'm pretty happy that 90% of people at about my level (and even people downright superior to me) are jumping on the Derm and Plastics ships. It's like a magical shunt that I've NO interest in, drawing away any difficulties and leaving the path to what I want wide open. Thanks for being all about the dermis, guys; much appreciated. 👍

glad to facilitate your dreams.

Last time I checked family practice wasn't all that competitive anyway...so enjoy.

I made close to 20 very stupid mistakes, as in if you would have asked me any other day I would have easily gotten them correct and told you in detail why they were correct. BUT on test day your brain does some crazy things and sometimes mistakes will be made. In the back of my head I still wonder how I would have scored if I hadnt screwed up on those easy ones. But to answer your question. YES you can make many stupid/careless errors and still do well.

How on earth do you people know how many "stupid mistakes" you made? Did you honestly go check First Aid the minute you got out of the test? I could barely remember specific answer choices enough to be able to do so. I remembered the general gist of a few questions that stumped me, but that's about it. I didn't want to talk about/think about Step 1 for the rest of that week.

my third year has started. i'm on medicine. everyday, without fail, a concept will come up from the boards. sometimes it reminds me of a question I was unsure of, other times it reminds me of a question I guessed on. this is not fun, but it's how i've been able to estimate my mistakes. it's not like i'm doing a deliberate inventory of the questions I missed. i wouldn't know where to start.

I started IM last week and my team had a pt presenting with PE d/t genetic hypercoagulability. After a thorough discussion of the coagulation cascade, Factor V Leiden, Protein C, etc, I went home and dusted off Robbins to read up a little only to realize that I had missed not one, but two Step 1 questions related to such things. So to make myself feel better, I just chalked them up to one of the several dozen "experimental" questions 😉

Actually, I remembered every question and all of the answer choices. I spent that whole night going through FA, UW and RR Path to look up all the answers. I made exactly 7.5 dumb mistakes.

Oh, and I got >260, just thought you'd like to know!

I remembered about half of the questions and answer choices, but can't think of any specifically I missed. Part of that is because of those 170 or so I remember, I haven't bothered to look up any answers so I still don't know which guesses were correct, and I also have a sinking feeling that I tended to only remember questions that I was a little more confident with. That only leaves about 150 more I probably missed!

I already knew you got a >260, MSK. You're such a pimp, they sent a memo out to everyone who took Step 1 this year saying "Dear student: MSK wrecked the curve. Just give up now."

I remember exactly two questions. One was A/V, the other was just bizarre.

I know that this is a thread about making silly mistakes, but I wanted to add that if you can really hone your test taking stamina and skills and improve your precision, your score will go up without even learning new content. Getting a great score will mean not getting things wrong that you know while also having the skills to get some of the hard stuff right. Many students work on the latter, so def pay attention to the test taking aspect of it and it will help...

I know exactly how you feel. I kept going over in my head all the renal questions that I got wrong especally the two questions about muddy brown casts. It seemed like my mind forgot all the easy questions that I got right and could only focus on the those stupid renal questions. I ended up getting a 250. So don't worry and keep in mind that our brains are going to remember those few silly mistakes we made.

I had the exact same experience. I had to tell myself the evening of my exam that I wasn't allowed to google the answers to any more remembered questions because I had discovered so many mistakes that I made and was getting so upset.

I ended up scoring about 6 points higher than my last NBME. We all make dumb mistakes and it evens out 🙂
