alright 2nd post , i am and 8th grader and i am going to high-school next year i have a few question and also a undergrad education question

1st off i should take earth science-biology-biology C-chemistry
and that for the rest of the time take a medical career ROP for jr. and sr. years

or would it be better to take earth science-biology-biology C -chemistry-Biology C -AP biology-than physics

1sr of for the undergrad question i like all physical and lab sciences a lot
so.... which we be most helpful just taking there general chemistry degree minor in either psychology or biology or vice versa
or they have Pre-Med program in either chemistry or biology ,but if i take their pre-med course in chemistry , and minored in biology i would overlap class's giving me time to take psych class's which i would enjoy and help me get the unit requirement
here is the university's website- http://www.csuchico.edu/biol/-biology
http://www.csuchico.edu/chem/

i hope that is not too confusing because it was for me lol
thanks all

First, nothing you learn in high school will prepare you for the college courses that matter. Second, nothing you learn in college will prepare you for medical school. You are only 13, maybe 14. You still have 4-5 years before you should even begin to worry about this stuff. Take home message: take classes that you enjoy. Your performance in the courses will reflect your passion.

Dude, you must be youngest person I've seen on this forum, LOL. You're only in 8th grade, go outside and have some fun.

I think the best person to answer your question might be your High School counselor. Are you planning on doing a 7-year BS/MD programs?

If you're going to a 4-year university before starting med school, then you've got plenty of time. Seriously, you should go out and have fun with your friends and enjoy your youth.

I see that you're a planner but come on, you don't need to start planning for med school in 8th grade. Good luck to you.

Agreed. Ask your counselor, and then go have a childhood.

I knew it was only a matter of time before somebody from junior high came in with a "what are my chances?" In general, each step (high school, college, med school, residency) is considered separate from the next. Anything you do in high school including research, shadowing, AP credits, etc. will have no impact on anything but the very next step in the process. How this applies to you is with your course selection. You can take all the AP stuff you want for the fun or challenge or whatever, but if it's for any med prereq you'll have to either repeat the course at the undergrad level or take something much harder to substitute for it.

lol maybe i should have said it was 40 , hmmmm i always wonder what could have been .......

fine than , 2 questions that are need possibly in the next 2 years\

Generally, High schools have a joint volunteer program with nearby community hospitals, ask your HS counselor if such a program exists at your HS.

Also, like Tic said your High school volunteer experience will count towards your application to college and not for your application to med school. So you could volunteer anywhere and not necessarily at a hospital.

My suggestion: go to high school, get good grades, and get into a good college. Then start worrying about going to medical school. You might find out in the meantime that medicine isn't for you (just because you like science doesn't mean it's the only option!). But for now, relax. You shouldn't be worrying about the rest of your life at such a young age.

I am restraining myself. And Eternal Rage, no Korean girls, please. Although, oh well, nevermind.

Well, I will have to start off by agreeing with the majority of people who have posted and tell you to go out and enjoy being a teenager. No matter how hard you try when you get older, it will never be quite the same again.

As for your classes - I would suggest taking the science that's required for your HS diploma and nothing more. You will just have to re-take it all once you get to college anyways. Spend your time in fun classes instead. Take drama, band, literature, and other "fun" classes. Take easy courses to up your GPA to help you get into a good undergrad school.

A lot of states have a program where you can take your junior and senior years of high school at a community college and get college and high school credit at the same time. IF that's the case, then talk to an adviser at the college and find out what classes they think you should take.

Spend some time shadowing some doctors to see if it is really something that looks like fun to you. Don't commit yourself to the idea of med school right now. There is a very good chance that once you have had a chance to see what doctors really do and once you have taken some classes your first year of college you might change your mind. You might not, true, but please, expose yourself to lots of choices so that when it comes time to really decide what you want to do you can make an informed decision.

There are programs in some areas where you can be dually-enrolled your last 2 years of high school. I participated in one such program in South Florida - we were in somewhat "normal" highschool classes in the morning, and took community college courses in the afternoons/evenings. I have to say it is my biggest regret thus far. . . Not only did I not get to experience normal high school fun (for those last 2 years) I made pretty much all B's (the # of hours I was in class was insane, by my own choosing) and I was young and didn't realize what 2 years worth of B's could do to ones GPA. Which makes for some serious explaining come interview time.

Granted, this was just my exerience and there were people (I'm sure) who made A's - but it seemed like many of us were making B's (or much worse for some) but were still thrilled to be "ahead" by 2 years. Also, some schools are underwhelmed when you've taken pre-reqs at the CC-level...especially if you made B's -even if you were only 15.

If this program is like another of which I am aware at a CSU school (I think it is at CSU Dominguez), then students actually begin taking college courses while still in high school. It is a weird system...but I had a friend who did something similar. He had his college degree by the time the rest of us were freshman or sophomores in college.

I think that is why this kid is asking...b/c he/she will have technically completed all requirements to graduate with a Bachelors degree.....SO BASICALLY THIS KID WILL BE STARTING A FORM OF COLLEGE AND I ASSUME WANTS TO APPLY DIRECTLY TO MED SCHOOL EVEN THOUGH HE/SHE WILL BE YOUNGER THAN THE MEDIAN MED SCHOOL APPLICANT AGE.

one thing i can recommend is start volunteering somewhere - like a hospital or a nursing home or something, and keep doing it for 8 years - man will that look good on amcas...

You're dedication is admirable, but I think a lot of the posters that are replying to your question are right. Enjoy high school and do well. Don't worry about what's going to get you into med school now. Out of all of the secondary applications that I filled out, NOT ONE asked about what I did in high school. It's what you do in college that will make your application stand out.

Good luck. And really, do go out and have some fun!

Can we have SDN Elementary School and SDN Middle School for those who find their purpose in life at a young age.? I think that 10 year olds will bring a unique perspective to this forum!

You are cute

What I would suggest to you is to try to enjoy your high school years, do well in classes and maybe strive for a scholarship for your undergrad...this way when it comes to medical school, hopefully you won't be strapped down with undergraduate loans as well as med school loans.

Before you know it, time will come for you to really apply to med school, if that is still what you want to do, and then you'll find a lot more support on this site.

you gota be kidding. These years things are getting wayyyyyy too ridiculous

I knew it was only a matter of time before somebody from junior high came in with a "what are my chances?" .

SDN as a whole should simply create a 'What are my chances 'chart' to answer' and or a page to answer all of these in one location and dedicate a singal thread, or even forum to it...so as to just sort get it over with being posted every 33.3 seconds.

:luck: :luck: :luck: If my post doesn't make sense, blame it on Saint Patricks day :luck: :luck: :luck:

Hi Notevenpremed-

I'm a high school science teacher (for now) and have some science advice for you... If it's possible, don't take Earth science - go right into Bio or Chem or whatever your high school offers. This will afford you more time as a junior or senior in high school to take the electives (AP Bio, AP Chem, Anat&Phys, etc.) Don't forget to take physics, because most competative colleges will look for the Bio-Chem-Physics core. Also, don't just focus on science. Be sure to take 4 years of math (try to place out of Algebra I and take Geometry as a freshman so that you can take AP Calc as a senior). Be sure to take 4 years of a language, 3 years of history, and 4 years of English. Take as many APs as you can without losing out on the important fun parts of high school.

As long as you maintain high grades, that should be all you need to get into a competative college (as long as money isn't too much of an issue). From there, a pre-med advisor can help you more once you're in college for the courses to take there.

Don't forget - and this is most important - high school and college are supposed to be FUN!!! Take some time and enjoy yourself and your friends, it all ends much too soon...

Here are some suggested thread topics for our middle school SDN members:

1. Puberty and its effect on MCAT scores: Do surging hormones help or hinder MCAT performance?

2. Would you wear this T-Shirt to Middle School, if it said: "Prepubescent, Premed, and proud of it?"

3. Poll: Which license do you want the most: A) Driver's license or B) Medical license.

4. Being premed is tough, especially when you are 4'6", 89 pounds, and a guy and the only club that will take you is the Chess Club.

5. Dating tips for premeds, pre and post puberty.

hahahaha sooooooo true!!! 👍 👍

I know I'm going to get flamed for agreeing with you but i don't care. You know the last thing I was thinking about when I was 13 or 14 was what I need to do to be premed. Even the IB kids weren't that nerdy. They enjoyed their highschool years and took things ONE STEP AT A TIME.

You are right. I could describe what I spent most of my time thinking about when I was 14, but unfortunately, I would be banned from this forum if I did. But it was not premed stuff, rest assured.

At my local hospital the age for volunteer acceptance is 16, but you should check with the volunteer coordinator at the hospital you plan to volunteer at. From experience hospital volunteering in HS was kinda crappy. You didn't do much since its hard to get real patient contact. If you can, try volunteering at a hospice or something but I'm not sure about age requirements for that. As a current EMT, I suggest looking into volunteering as one. The cadets (under 18) don't do much either, but they get to observe alot of things such as medical and physical examinations. As for shadowing, why don't you go ask your family doc and see what he/she says? I doubt they would let you, but you never know. Basically you should do something that would let you know if you would enjoy a career in medicine.

Also keep in mind that your interest in medicine could change as you move into HS and undergrad, where you will be exposed to many different subjects and disciplines that you have not experienced before. No-offense but most kids in your age range only know about a select few professions that one can pursue. The main ones being, doctor, lawyer, teacher, businessman and scientist. So all i'm saying is don't be surprised if your interests change.
Good luck in High School 🙂

SHADOW!!! go get some experience in a hospital, a private practice physician's office, even a free/community health clinic. I'm glad that you are already considering your future...but from the time I was in 8th grade (I'm now a sophomore in undergrad now) i changed my mind 6 times on what I wanted to be. It was after a shadowing experience that I decided medicine was the career that I decided to pursue. So...don't worry about the classes...if your school offers an AP Biology or Chemistry class that might be beneficial because you'll be exposed to some of the material you'll approach in undergrad. I would say just go out there and get some medical experience and make sure it's really what you want to do. You may get out there and hate it, or you could be like me and absolutely LOVE it.
Best of Luck!!
