Hi Guys,

Hey guys, I know its unorthodox for many high school students to be posting on here, but I just have a few questions on what I should take senior year for high school. I know some of you say "oh, high school doesn't really matter," but any just try to give your best answer to help me out please! I plan on going to UF (and Im pretty sure I can easily get accepted into Undergrad, possibly even the honors accelerated dental program, which will cut off a year of schooling).

Currently as a Junior I have gotten 4.0s in both Freshmen and Sophomore year, and now I am a junior, most likely going to get my first B in AP Chemistry.

I have so far gotten a 4 on the AP Euro History exam and plan on taking the AP US history, AP Chem and AP English exams and getting at least 4s on each of them. I might get a 3 on the Chemistry one, despite this, I was not planning on using the Chem credit anyways as it is highly not recommended.

Next year I plan on taking: AP Bio, AP Psychology, Honors Spanish, AP English Lit, AP Gov. and Politics (along with AP Economics)... now my first question is this: do I go AP Calc, or AP stat.... How much will I need to know either of these topics in college undergrad for dentistry, because I've heard you do necessarily have to take either to get into dental school. But if I do need it, my thought it that I take Calc, get a 3/4 on the exam so then I dont have to take it in college or ever have to deal with its evilness.

Next question: For taking Physics (req. of Dental School), will calc be necessary or not?

Next question: Can I use all my history credits, Econ, English and other AP credits (anything other than Science) to count towards my credit count in college, thus lowering the amount of classes I have to take?

Do I have to take a math course during college (Taking Stat is fine by me, its just taking calc that worries me).

So I think the only classes next year that require a lot of work (from my school) is Econ, Calc, and Bio... but if I cut calc out then I will have a lot more breathing room.

Final question: At the accelerated program at UF, it says you need a High school GPA of at least 3.8 , and a 3.5 science GPA, first year and a 3.75 overall GPA first year.. Does that High school GPA account for the time you apply to Undergrad school (aka Beginning of Senior year) or the end of senior year included?

thanks guys, any resposnses welcome 🙂

One of two dental schools want Ap calc, its really not that important. You usually need a higher course outside of algebra, depending on your major. I just took stats

Next question: For taking Physics (req. of Dental School), will calc be necessary or not?
Theres cal based physics and algebra based physics, just take whatever is easier (usually algebra)

Next question: Can I use all my history credits, Econ, English and other AP credits (anything other than Science) to count towards my credit count in college, thus lowering the amount of classes I have to take? I believe it depends on the school but for the most part, they count. Someone else correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't most dental schools want to see college leveled science classes and not AP classes?I personally wouldn't chance the biology related courses but I'm sure someone else can provide better input.

Just enjoy your last year of school and go to an affordable college!I had friends who went to community college and took basic requirements(non science courses) and then transferred to a 4 year college and finish their remaining 2 years with just science courses). Again, I wouldn't risk the biology related sciences for AP credits. Everything else seems fine though. Good luck and have fun.

Thank you sooooo much! But at my school, the highest offering of Bio would be AP level. There are no college courses available via the school. But you answered most of my questions and exited me that I DONT have to take that EVIL EVIL Calculus!! 😀 . But I still want to know if somebody can answer that last question, I know its a bit specific.

But just wondering, what was your major?

I went to UW-Milwaukee for my undergrad and got a biology major, and I can't remember if it was for the major or for Marquette Dental school specific requirements, but I know I had to take a Math Stats class AND a calculus class in college. Regarding physics, UWM had a calc based physics class (for physics majors typically), and a algebra based physics class, which typically pre-med, pre-dent, etc. students would take. Although I don't know about how most colleges work i'd guess its pretty similar everywhere.

From my personal experience, I MAJORLY regret not taking any AP classes in high school. Chem and Physics were pretty difficult for me in college because my high school physics classes were a complete joke. People I spoke with when I was taking college Chemistry didn't think it was too bad, but most of those people took AP chem in high school. That said, I think you are on the right track and you should be pretty much prepared considering the classes you've already taken!

Congrats to you for already knowing what profession you want to pursue. But in all honesty do your best in school (sounds like you'll be fine), go to a good university and do well in your classes there. Then hope to do well on the DAT and apply.

Shadow along the way so you know exactly what you are getting into. Shadow a general dentist, periodontist, oral surgeon, endodontist, etc. Shadow them all!

But you need to have plenty of fun before you get to dental school. Keep that in mind! Good Luck!
