ATM I am a sophomore and had a 3.1 uw and 3.25 w gpa freshman year which I felt was a sub par and wish I had started better. This year I am on pace to have a 3.57 uw and a 3.71 w. Doing the math combining both years I would have a 3.29 uw and a 3.44 w. Wish I started better though guys. I want to become a Doc Someday as well. Any advice/Words of Wisdom??? I have learned a great lesson from Freshman year which is to START off well Freshman Year of College.

High school is the time for you to figure out your study habits, what works for you, what doesn't work for you and how best to balance your amount of free time with amount of time you need to study.

What grades you get in HS have no bearing on your future as a doctor except for what undergrad university you go to. That being said, what undergrad you go to also doesn't really matter, what is much more important is that you do well wherever you do undergrad.

What happened to you isn't actually a bad thing. Your grades are not so low that you cant get into college, and there is certainly time for you to bring your grades up. What you should do is work on figuring out how you learn best.

Dont stress about what grades you already got, they wont matter in the long run. Use HS to learn how to improve them, then get top grades in undergrad.

just my .02 cents

Agreeing with the above.

High school grades don't count for med school, except inasmuch as they represent good study habits/work ethic and get you into a decent college. Likewise, college grades don't matter in residency for the same reason.

Or med school grades in a fellowship.

or anything when you're dead 🙁

It happens. I think that my gpa freshman year was around the same as yours and I spent the rest of my high school career fixing my mistake. As long as you keep your grades up throughout high school, you should be in pretty decent shape come application time. Then hit the ground running freshman year of college.

As a result of my bad start freshman year I think PITT would be a long shot for me, but I might be able to bring my GPA to a 3.4 uw and a 3.6 w bye the end of Junior Year if I keep this up. Now I might have to go to Duquesne or some other good Colleges in Pittsburgh Area. If i do not get accepted into PITT.

Thanks for all the advice so far, and also would love to receive some more from you guys. Keep it coming.

I've been told that high school is a place for mistakes and for fixing those mistakes. You learn different things and change habits. G.P.A right now shouldn't be a BIG deal, but it should be a concern. Try new things, do this a certain way, do that a certain way and see what works for you. I'm a Sophomore too and I did things I wish I hadn't done my Freshman year. But I know that if I can keep striving, and pulling through I know I can achieve nothing but the best. Good Luck.
