Hi everyone.
I'm currently a high school junior and interested in optometry. So i just would like to know if there are optometry schools which offer 7 year programs or any program for high school applicants that assures admission in an optometry school.

If anybody knows, please let me know which schools have such a program.

Thank you very much 🙂

NO school guarantees admissions into their OD program, but there ARE some 7 year schools. However, you still have to go through the admissions process and be accepted into their OD program.

Really? Which schools? I didn't think there were any at all. Some schools have summer programs for pre-optometry, but none that I know of that are "7 yr programs". Though I think maybe some will grant you your bachelors if you apply before completing your 4 yr degree.

I think SUNY has a 7 year thing.

for those applying to suny, be careful NOT to assume you are automatically accepted into their program if you get accepted into the 7-yr program. despite them telling you that you will have a seat at their school, you still have to go through the same admissions process and being an accelerated student doesn't give you any sort of advantage in the eyes of the admissions committee. you have the same chance of acceptance as everyone else applying

So what's the point of applying into the 7 year program then?

from the provided link:

Benefits
A student saves one year in tuition, travel and books. In addition, students who are accepted into the program simultaneously establish a candidacy for admission to the professional program. The student also receives continuous guidance from both institutions throughout the seven-year program.

Looks like you skip 1 year of undergrad as part of the program. ng26 does have a valid point in that no where in the description does it say you have an advantage in the application process nor does it state admission is guaranteed.

from what i can tell, the only advantage is maybe having your eyes on optometry admission from early on in your college career, and knowing that early usually means the student can probably tailor their undergraduate education/resume better than a student who decides in junior that they want to be an optometrist.

but who knows, maybe there's more to it. [shrug]
