I'm a high school senior considering a career in optometry. I'm not really an overachiever, but I still do very well academically. Is there any advice any of you can share about the field and preparation? How much free time does a typical pre-opt have compared to an optometry student? Also, would the oversupply of optometrists be a threat to the future generations of optometrists? I've heard a lot of negativity about the practice of optometry as well as some not-so-bright predictions about the future of the field. Any and all advice or suggestions are hugely appreciated.

thanks!

Ryan...

It's good that you are thinking about your future here but you are putting the cart waaaay before the horse.

What you should be concentrating on now is doing well in and enjoying your senior year in high school and finding the right college that has a program you want to attend and is in a city you want to live in for 4 years.

Once you have a year or two of college under your belt, then you can start worrying about the "future of the profession."
