I am currently a student at the University of Hawaii with a high semester GPA of 3.5 and a LOW AMCAS GPA (which include failing grades). I have not taken the MCAT yet. (I am considered a Freshman) 😳

My first year of college was rough. I was not serious about school and ended up not going to classes, but did not withdraw.🙁 My second semester I was stalked by a student and then attacked on campus, following another failed semester and academic dismissal. I went to court with this individual and the case was settled. (I took a year off of school.) I met with counselors and an adviser. I also attended sessions with the school registrar. I went back to school (with letter from the courts explaining the circumstances) and received a 3.5 last semester. 😀

On the Dean's list! Yippie!!

My question is, what are my chances...?

If I continue to do the same or better, the classes I retook will bring my cumulative GPA to a 3.5 or higher. BUT (and this is a BIG "but") no matter how well I do, because of those 7 failing grades I have, my AMCAS GPA will NEVER be above a 3.2 even if I get a 4.0 GPA every semester for the next few years...😕

Being a doctor is my dream, ad I am not sure if I should give up because this GPA issue, or do I keep trying... Any advice? Thank you!

P.S. I don't want to get into an Ivy league school or anything, I would really like to get into JABSOM, because of the emphasis of care they have for the types of people and medical diseases that highly impact the people of Hawaii.

That's what I figured. Your post makes much more sense now that you edited it. Your GPA is pretty low. A 3.2 will not cut it for MD. A strong MCAT score will probably not be able to makeup for a GPA that low. How important is becoming an MD to you? If you want to become a physician, I would recommend retaking some of those classes that you failed, and going the DO route. DO schools will actually replace your bad grades with the retake grade. This could save your GPA and enable you to become a physician.

I retook all but two, of those seven classes and received either an A or B+ in them. I just figured with the AMCAS GPA taking all tries into account, those 7 failed classes cannot be redeemed for my GPA anyway. There is nothing more, that I want to do then become a Physician. The reason why I am also adamant on an MD school, is because the hospital that I would like to work at only accepts Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees.

No offense but I think choosing a specific hospital is a bit premature.

Your first goal should be to get into med school. It might take a while but you can still do MD. You're gonna have to consistently get great grades in upper level sciences and maybe then even do a SMP program or something.

Personally though I would worry about what kind of doctor and where I work after getting in

I completely get where you are coming from, but it is the only hospital on the East side of the island... It is also the only large medical facility the island has.

I know I an jumping the gun, but this is my home.

I am looking toward DO schools...

Very sorry to hear of your troubles.

There are MD programs out there that reward re-invention (Albany and BU come to mind), so if you maintain the strong upward trend, do well on MCAT, then I think you'll be fine.

DO programs are much more forgiving of a cGPA of 3.2ish.

Definitely call the Admissions office at U I and see how'd they'd view you as a candidate.
