anyone know the highest osmolality of a liquid that can be given via peripheral line? I know that after a certain oSm the fluids have to be given via a central line, anyone know this 'magic' number?
1,000 for peripheral parenteral nutrition. However, this is highly variable as it is rate dependent. (1,000 Osm at 150 mL/hr for a maximum of 1.5 hours is what we were taught on a medicine floor month.)
i guess the max on peripheral lines is 900 oSm. Some say 800. however, i was reading this study on pubmed where theyve used up to 1200 oSM and said its ok, as long as you are using the line for <5 days.
