I keep hearing rumors on SDN that dentists have the highest suicide rates. How valid is this?

I think you make a good point here.absurdhippo said:I don't know the facts, but I think it is very plausible. I talked with my dentist about this and he says it has to do with the business end of things. How prepared do you guys think d-schools prepare us for opening and running your own private practice? From what I've heard, not nearly enough. Imagine starting your own practice (a huge financial investment) and not getting high enough returns. Compound that with the massive student loans you had to pull out and now have to pay off...
Anyway, just remember, suicide is never the answer.
We also have to deal with men.Madeleine405 said:I bet the reason that women have slightly higher rates than men is because everyone assumes thay are hygenists. LOL

Sprgrover said:Especially this one, as joblessness is a rampant problem in dentistry (which also explains why so many dentists struggle to pay back loans).
NoBraces said:Really? I thought getting a job after dental school wasn't a big struggle. One could find a job as an associate in an existing practice with ease. I know that the loans I will incur after school won't let me establish a practice right away so I will either have to find a job as an associate in an existing practice or work in a hospital, but I'd like to establish a practice eventually.
If job security is a problem why do so many people go to dental school?
