How do you all feel about having not-so-subtle hair highlights at interviews? I am wondering if they will make me appear unprofessional to the ad-coms. They are pretty crazy highlights but i love them, and spent big $$ on them, and don't want to dye over them unless i really have to. any opinions on this?

You can always put some temporary dye in that matches more closely with the non-highlighted hair, like something that only lasts a week or so.

is there any way that you can style your hair that would make them less noticeable? or could you like cover them over with a 2 week dye that would wash out and leave the highlights intact after the interview was over? I don't know, i think adcoms are pretty conservative... and if they are as bold as you make them sound, you may not want to go in there with them... but at the same time i know how much highlights cost and that's a total bummer if you have to get rid of them for interviews 👎

Hey there JessUMD;

Used to be a hairdresser. I know, go ahead and laugh, but... if your highlights are blond then most temporary (store bought crap color in my mind) CAN permanently ruin your beautiful hair if your highlights are blond or light.

Temp dye (especially store garbage) ends up permanently staining your hair and won't ever come completely out if you hightlights are really light. What hair color do you have naturally? I am assuming your have some of your natural hair color mixed in with the new highlights and the highlights are blond. If you went with some bold "red" or other color of highlight I can maybe give you some different advice. Send me a pic in a PM if you want more info. I did hair for about 5 years before I gave it up. Now I just do family and friends.

I think you shouldn't take any risk, and dye over your hair because I think Admission in Dentistry is more important than hair dye. I know you spent big $$ on them but you can make much more if you become a dentist. Good luck for your interview 👍

Trying wearing a conservative hairstyle such as a bun, maybe this way it can still look professional. As long as all the attention is not drawn by your hair you should be fine 🙂

i don't think i'd want my dentist to have crazy pink or blue highlights i think it would be unprofessional yet if you want to stand out go as it is might not be good but you'll get noticed...

can you cut my hair? i hate going to get my hair cut cause it never is cut correctly and it just plain sucks most of hte time. i have plain hair and body wants to cut it right except this hair cuttery place about 2 hours from my house go figure.

basically a good rule of thumb to go by is that adcoms are looking at and talking to everyone and asking themselves 'is this someone we want representing our school and treating our patients?' so if the hair is unconservative enough that there is any chance at all they might answer their own question 'no', then definitly get rid of them... like someone else pointed out, you can spend another 100 on highlights or you can spend another 1000 plus time re-applying, which are you going to pick. at the same time maybe these highlights aren't as bad as we are making them out to be, really hard to say without a picture, so you really have to use your own best judgement regardless of what we say.

no kidding, when i used to go to nice salons they NEVER cut it how i said to, they always thought they knew better than me what would look good and just did their own thing, and i always hated the results! now i go to the cheap places and do my own highlights and it is 90% cheaper and i generally like the results 100% better. at least that way it gets done how i want it done and not how someone else wants it done. 🙄

yeah, why is it when you ask for a "trim to just remove the split ends" they end up chopping off 5 inches? i used to thing more expensive=better, so went and got a $85 cut... and they did the same thing. argh! either i don't speak or they don't undertand english, but in my book trim does not equal buzzcut... so i finally decided that if i was going to end up with hideous cuts anyways, might as well get it done cheap... and miracles amazing wonders, my new hairdresser actually just trims!! yay! (and for <$20, too)

Thanks for all the replies. I will try out some conservative style like a bun (good idea) but if that doesn't work, I think I will take everyone's advice and just dye over them (sigh). Even if it ruins them I guess the $100+ is a small price to pay in the long run. They definitely aren't blue or purple highlights, but I suppose they are trendy and funky enough to make a conservative adcom question my professional side. My computer is being ******ed and I can't seem to upload a photo right now. FYI: they are blond and bright red highlights mixed in with my dark brown hair, with an edgy razor cut.

Take heart, and if you DO decide that YOU think they aren't professional (remember professional's can look stylish) then please PAY a professional to fix them..... Do NOT buy store garbade or have a friend fix them... People usually start going way wrong if they do this. Take it from me, I have fixed many a "good" intentioned relative or friends mistakes.
