I agree, do your research regarding the schools you plan on applying to. Each one is unique in its own right and looks for different things in an applicant. Evaluate yourself and know your strengths so that you can find a school that will best suit you and your needs for the next 2.5 years. It's extremely competitive nowadays, but if you plan correctly it's likely there will be at least one school out there that will accept you, so you just gotta be familiar with them.
In general, though, I think it's important to apply early, actively communicate with each school's admissions coordinator, volunteer in as many settings as you can, and budget yourself (applications are expensive!)
