so many dental schools are starting soon (especially schools on the semester system), and there are several questions i wanna ask to current dental students:

1) how would you have best prepared for dental school, knowing now you've gone through your first or couple years of dental school?

2) if you had known an advice you didn't know before you started dental school, what would that be?

3) & finally, if there is one or couple words of important wisdom for newly incoming dental students, what would that be?

thanks a bunch everyone!

don't add an "s" to words that are not pluralizable

go into school with a positive attitude and willing to put all your effort into it! dental school is a lot harder if u worry a lot and take things too hard. i know because i am one of those people 😉 also, try to get out and participate in class activities if you have time, it's good to get to know your classmates a little outside of school and is a great stress reliever. i wish i had done more of that last year. finally, if you are freaking out and feeling in over your head, talk about it with a classmate or better yet a friendly upperclassman, they are or have gone through the same thing and will make you feel better that you're not alone and that you will make it through alive 🙂

1) Stress and fear will be your greatest ally

2) its pretty stressful

3) dont let your pride get in the way of graduating

It's never a shame to ask questions or ask for extra help.

2) if you had known an advice you didn't know before you started dental school, what would that be?

I sort of discovered this myself...get to know the D3s and D4s. They can give you some guidelines and see what practicing real world dentistry is like while you're still in school down the road later. (and you're building a network for yourself as well)

3) & finally, if there is one or couple words of important wisdom for newly incoming dental students, what would that be?

Don't stress too much. If you don't understand or stuck on something, leave it and come back to it say 10 minutes later. If it doens't work, ask a friend or instructor. If you're going to make mistakes, this is the time to make them (and learn from them- don't get discouraged). Otherwise, if you make mistakes after you graduate, it can cost you A LOT of money and stress.

Flush it down the toilet and start placing a fake smile on your face everyday 😀 😀

Don't get discouraged when you study your butt off and you don't get a grade that matches your hard work. It will happen ... over and over again. Keep studying hard, and study both for your own betterment, and for getting those points on the exam, because they are not related, but you need them both.

Don't be afraid to ask for tutoring or help if you need guidance.

Give help to underclassmen if you can.

You will make some great friends during dental school. Be sure to hang out as much as possible outside of class.

Take time to excercise during second year.

Don't sweat the small stuff....and remember its all small stuff

just remember that the difference between passing and failing you preclinical labs comes down to 0.1mm on a plastic tooth. no sweat.

sigh...

I wouldn't have taken a stupid, unhelpful major in college. Take as many science courses as you can. Pathology, Anatomy, Biochem.

2) if you had known an advice you didn't know before you started dental school, what would that be?

It's gonna be a looooong road. Stick it out.

3) & finally, if there is one or couple words of important wisdom for newly incoming dental students, what would that be?

Get a lot of sleep. Play on the weekends! There's always someone stupider than you.

thanks a bunch everyone!

Great answers sjdent!

Biology is a great undergrad major. Taking anatomy, micro, physio, biochem as an undergrad will be an asset. It will allow you to focus on dental courses especially during the first two years.

You'll be working a lot harder in dental school than you did as an undergrad, no matter what your major.

Persevere! It is an underrated trait. Persevere and you will pass all of your courses, all of your requirements and all of your exams.

It will happen. Just stay the course. Good Luck!

Dentistry is the most SUBJECTIVE of all of the health professions. Every attending faculty will tell you a something different...like to use a differnet material...which there are so many...so you just have to learn what all of the faculty likes and do it there way while you are in school so that you can do it your way when you graduate! 🙂

1. dont listen to upperclassmen when they tell you "dont worry about it".
2. study as much as possible, you're in dental school, you won't have a life anyway.
3. Bask in the glory of you accomplishment, ie getting here, and enjoy the fact that you will be making alot of freagin cash in the near future.
4. oh ya, be nice to you're classmates and teachers.

#1 is actually very true - it seemed that everytime upperclassmen said "don't worry about it", that is when someone in our class would fail (like part I boards for example.) Perhaps they forgot how hard they studied, and then when they studied hard it wasn't a problem.

Okay, some things you shouldn't worry about, but it is tough to tell which is which.

I'm currently a 2nd year dental student and I soooooo wish I would have done some things differently before dental school, namely prepared myself better for it.

1) Start studying for things like Gross Anatomy, review biochemistry topics, microbiology, if possible. If you aren't up to it, at least practice some of your hands skills. If possible get a job as a lab tech somewhere working in the dental field <--the ppl that were previously lab techs, dental assistants, dental hygiene, etc are always the ones with the better hand skills and that actually know what the heck they are doing.

2) If you are too busy with other stuff and can't do the things listed above, then simply do some reading on the dental field. Find out what simple dental terms mean, dental materials that are used, what a dental office is composed of...etc. At least get your eyes and ears familiar with 'dentistry' as a profession.

3) Some simple advice I can give you: be patient, be organized, and be ready to work your butt off. One of the keys to success in dental school is time management. You will soon realize that your dental classmates are exactly as anal retentive as you think they will be, plus more. If you aren't like them now, become one of them...<---easier said then done (if you're anything like me)...they are the ones that are successful.

Good luck!

Just general advice. Make friends. As many as is humanly possible with people in your class. These are the people that iwll save your butt when you are stuck on somehting.

Never burn a bridge and screw someone over. You never know when you might need these people to help you out again in the future.
