Is it a violation of Hippa for a MD to bring a healthcare student into an examination room to see a patient and give the student access to a patients e-file without getting permission from the patient ?

At my old hospital, we used to get these montly "Random scenario X, is this a HIPPA violation?" emails. This thread would be perfect for that. If medicine doesn't work out for you, I suggest you become a HIPPA compliance officer.

Don't most healthcare students (i.e. PA, nursing) sign those Hippa papers too at the start of their rotations?

Hell, I remember signing them as a pre-med student when I shadowed in a hospital...

HIPAA grants that others involved in the patient's healthcare can have access to their medical records when appropriate. You're involved in the patient's healthcare, so you're good.
