I'm taking Honors Histology as an undergrad right now, and my professor keeps saying that this is the hardest class in med school, and that he has students come back from med school thanking him saying it really saved their butts once they left undergrad.

Any thoughts on this class as a dental student?

Depends on which med sch you are going to.
Difficulty depends on the professors.
They can flunk us any time they want because there is just so much material.
However, histology at ucla dental sch is filled with enthusiastic faculty which students love. going thru slides are very enjoyable. Unfortunately, some of the faculty who have served us for many many decades have decided to retired. What a huge loss to our future classes.

And, anatomy is by far our toughest basic science class and denture is simply designed to fail people.

Especially if the class includes a lab portion...the lab identifications can be quite difficult if you haven't had any previous exposure to any of it

i'm already shivering about the lab section of histology. Hey. Ecdoesit. thanks for those materials.

Anyone know of any great histology website - perhaps one that has pretty pictures.

And NO. I'm not talking about porn.

I have heard the exact same thing, op.

can't comment as a dental student...
but histo was awesome in undergrad

your prof. is absolutely right. we took histho in our 1st year and i hated it. most of us did well, but as far as slide ID went, most werent too comfortable.

learn as much as you can about histho. it will definitely help you.

Histo was the only class in dental school I failed an exam in.

Hey, jk5177
the link has the best pictures, man.
actually, i saw another link from the school across town. they have a pretty awesome website too.

i heard they will modify their histo curriculum. PBL style! good luck. no need to worry. i didnt pass way too many midterms, so it is normal for me. My record just goes higher and higher. How far could I go? In any case, I think I do fine at the end though. Get ready to NP, but dont feel down, fire back up and fight again. Just like, u mess up this prep, ok, do it again. EVENTUALLY, we will get through. If you understand this concept, UCLA is all about applying this concept in reality.

I'd guess that pharm and path are pretty damn hard in med school. I can't believe they memorize all those diseases and drugs. I thought histo was chill. Anatomy was great, my favorite class. My toughest class 1st year was neuro simply because I hated it.

Hardest first year courses in my opinion

5. Operative
4. Neurosciences
3. Gross
2. General Histo
1. Microbio (our teacher was FRIGGIN brutal)

hey, drhobie, shouldnt u be studying? u have to study hard so that our sch could have that #2 ranking on board score. hehe

dr M is nice to us knowing how many people were killed from neuro at ur year. that final was the most unexpectedly easy. dr fisher's ridiculous with his wordings in his questions. (u will notice a trend that people start to crowd around certain professors, particularly Dr Miller. when he is at ur table, u would actually learn something and make sense) if dr fisher is still the course chair next year, pray that ur tests wont have any case based questions.(i have to say, those 12 finals aint that bad comparing with those 20 case based questions) i guess we are better off cos we have our own body to dissect while the med students... since they are changing our curriculum in whichever way in recent years, it is really hard to predict whether histo or any other class is harder. i couldnt imagine dental material be short answer though? Having a test with EBD? biochem is something that worths ur attention though. so much material(o ya, we are one of the few sch that teaches nutrition in biochem). i like dr M style: remember things once and one more for the board and forget it ever cos u will never use it again.

Oh damn, I've gotta get that 99% to pull us even with Harvard? I don't think that's gonna happen. The more I study the more I think....general dentistry! 😀

Sorry to hear you didn't like anatomy. Sometimes a teacher isn't right for everybody. I liked all the teachers for anatomy. It is a pretty important class though. There are several classes that will impact your ability to practice dentistry without harming your patients and that's one of them. Path is obviously important too. Virtually every path class this past quarter we heard how it's our responsibility to diagnose obscure lesions, and if we fail to do so we'll be sued. Regardless of the legal consequences, a good foundation of pathology permits you to make a huge impact in people's lives. 2 months ago I diagnosed a basal cell carcinoma, which had been missed by 3 physicians (including 1 dermatologist) and 1 dentist. It was extremely close to the eye. If it had stayed there a few more months the eye would have been destroyed.

Anyway, the reason we're called doctors and not technicians is that we are supposed to have the knowledge to diagnose and cure, rather than simply cut a prep. So it's definitely in your and your patients' best interests to retain as much knowledge post-exams/boards as possible. I know it's a monumental task with everything that we're taught, but you'll figure out what's important and what can be left in the nether-regions of the brain never to be heard from again.

^^^ Ambiguous post. ^^^

Is 5 the hardest, or is 1 the hardest? I think you mean that 1 is the hardest right? Aren't you at UCLA by the way?

Amen brother! I get these kind of dedication from other UCLA students as well (ie ecdoesit), and it makes me feel like I'm right at home. Can't wait till September 13th.

You mean UCLA is modifying or the school across town?
