Hi all,

I am taking a gap year to study GCE A levels after completion of F7 in HK.
As I did poorly in my HKCEE🙁, only 20 points, 5* in eng, and extremely poor for HKAL🙁. Still, I wish to apply to to CUHK/HKU medicine no matter how low the chance is (low, not no). I am willing to do everything that could possibly put me into either medical school. I am planning to take 5 or more GCE A levels and am confident that I can get at least 5A and >90% in each subject. I also got reference letter(s) from professor(s) in CUHK faculty of medicine and had some experience in PWH 🙂.
So please tell me at least how many As, I should get to compensate my HKCEE and HKAL (though I am apply through non jupas where HKAL should be irrelevant). And please suggest me how to defend myself if I am attacked at my previous results during interviews (how to cover them up... etc).

I moved to US after taking the Hong Kong A level exam. I guess I am one of the very few ones in SDN who know what you are talking about.

Basically, qwerty2010 is a reapplicant to the two and only two medical schools in Hong Kong (unfortunately). [People might not know in this forum, Hong Kong was a British colony and is now part of China🙁] I think ppl should move this thread to somewhere about foreign medical school.

qwerty2010: From my previous classmate who was interviewed in CUHK med school, you are not gonna get in unless you are in the science track in Form 6&7 (ie, grade 12-13th grade in Canada) and have at least 2 As in those science A-levels. CUHK even considers 20% of your grade in HKCEE and it discriminates retaker. A in GCE is equivent to a C in AL, you know that. And I believe you know very well that recommodation letter means nothing in such an academic-fousing country in Hong Kong. My other friend who got an A in AL physics, B in Biology and nothing less than Cs didn't get in. My (yet) another friend had 4As in science and U in use of English didn't get in- he ended up in ChingWa University in Beijing.

The conclusion is - sorry to let you down- you will not even be considered for medical schools in HK no matter how much "you want to get in." If you are that sure you will do well in GCE, why not retake the HKALE as a self-study applicant and ace them all? Then apply through non-jupas to try your luck.

Last but not least, you should find a better platform to ask your questions than in studentdoctor.net. This website is mostly about situations in United States of America, and people will think you are insane to talk about jupas, ce, gce hkale, F7. (FYI: There is no F7 / secondary school in US. They call it high school and freshman year in college)

I dont think that will help... i know some ppl have reference letters from professors in hku, applied to hku and failed to get into hku and cuhk... and same for cuhk, i think reference letters is NOT useful at all...
sorry to disappoint... so u better study harder!!

Frankly speaking, if you are so sure that you are going to get 5 or more A*s in your GCE A Level, then try your luck.
No offense, but doing 5 or more GCE A2 is kind of tiring. You only need 4 to get interviewed.
I am from the UK and got offers from both Universities in Hong Kong for medicine. Selection is actually not bad, provided that you are applying for non JUPAS. From the JUPAS stream, they will be extremely bias in selecting interviewees. I do not need to further explain that to you since you are from Hong Kong. Whilst from the non-JUPAS route, since it is expected that all applicants will/have got straight As in the relevant subjects, so what makes you stand out is actually, REFERENCE letter, work experience, and ECA. (sorry to have disprove you guys up there).
Of course, reference letter shouldn't be just saying " he is a all rounded student and showed much interest in medicine" . Try to get attachments in hospitals in Hong Kong, especially the 2 teaching hospitals. If you had not done so before during L6th or U6th, you better get some of it done during Xmas or so.
This would not only increase your understanding Medicine as a career, as well as establishing knowledge towards the medical school.

FYI: If you believe you can get 5As, why not take the BioMedical Admission Test and apply for Imperial/UCL/Cambridge/Oxford?

I myself is a houseman officier at Royal Free Hospital NHS of UCL Medlcal School. If you are that into medicine, it doesn't matter where you apply. Provided that you are confident in taking that annoying liscense exam after you graduate elsewhere if not HKU/CUHK.
