US-FMG, step 1= 221/90, step II= 237/96. Pre-clinical grades = average, Rank = lower 1/2, Clinical = all H's except psych. Strong LOR x3 anesthesia and one CV surgon. How many programs should I apply to? Looks like this year is going to be hard. What is considered an early application? UP till the end of september = early? When do most people submit their application? I'll be crushed if I don't match, and I'm feeling the pressure. 😕

Dude, I could have posted almost this EXACT same post (except for the Step 2 score, which I take next week). We are in the same boat.

I'm interested to hear what others think, but I know some people had their apps go out on 9/1/04. Also, I will have sixteen weeks of anesthesia electives by interview time, including 3 auditions. Am I overdoing it?

P.S. I hope I do that well on Step 2. Nice score. Wish me luck.

Maybe 137 is a good number???? Oh yeah, and another 100 for prelim/transitionals. 😀  J/K

Blow up STEP II brother! :luck:

early app = one that was sent out shortly after 9:01 am on sept 1st.

i know friends who matched last year in gas with similar stats as yours. you should do fine. just send out your app asap, set your sights a little lower & apply to some mediocre & below mediocre programs. as to # of programs to apply to? i would say more than 20, less than 40.

There's no such thing as an early ERAS application. There's only on time and late. Don't let the personal statement hold you up, it's not worth it. Also, put in as much as you have done even if you don't have all your letters, you can still get interviews without a complete application.

Do you have any suggestions for some medicore/below mediocore programs to apply as back up? I know it will be tough for me...I hae apbout average grades in clincal/basic science, step 1 of 220 and taking step 2 next week. But my dept @ UTMB knows me really well and by the time I interview I will have done 4 months of anes during 4th year and 1 that I did after 1st year. Hopefully I will have some sort of chance! Wanted to know where else to apply to increase my chances....thanks!

I'm from NYC so my knowledge may be limited geographically but here are some examples:

St. Barnabus MC, NJ
St. Joseph's MC, NJ
Brookdale, NYC
Maimonides, NYC
NY Methodist, NYC
Nassau University, NY
SUNY Upstate, NY
NY Medical College, Westchester NY

Just look for programs that are not part of a university hospital. I think your chances are just fine. Good luck.

Hey... from what I heard... you should be just fine. I have a step one similar to yours and have done well otherwise. I am taking my step 2 at end of october. also... there are people with a 229 step 1 matching at columbia. did someone stress you out by telling you your chances are not good?

am curious to hear from anyone regarding txdoc2be post...

Sevo,

Don't worry, my man! You have EXCELLENT credentials. I will bet you the total cost of my student loans that you'll match somewhere. I am also a US-IMG, Caribbean grad, with a Step I score of 223/90 but with a poor Step II <200. I applied to 50 programs, did one audition elective, got a good LOR from the program director at one of the major programs in NYC, half H's in clinicals, top 1/3 in my preclinical classes. I received 12 interviews and matched at my 2nd choice, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in a sweet home Chicago. You WILL be fine!!

Yeah, you people with scores over 220 need to stop freakin out others with scores near 200!

I think all of us with scores over 220 should be OK. That includes IMG's

I agree. For some reason, the competitiveness of anesthesiology is consistently overstated.

Hey Ed,

Thanks for the info. Similar situation now as you were a year ago (similar scores, same school, except I'm writing Step 2 next week). I'm planning/will apply to about 35-40 programs. Seems that there's a lot of interest in anesthesiology this year among my classmates, though.

Do you think your Step 2 score hurt you at all? What was your first choice, just out of curiousity? (Hope you don't mind me asking publicly... or you can PM me.)
