What are people's thoughts about the show Hoarders? How do you think it represents the field? How well do you think it portrays actual treatment, and is it ethical to televise such a personal process?

I went to a talk on hoarding about 3 months ago - I remember they basically criticized that it only shows the extreme elements of hoarding and not really the continuum. Obviously, only extreme hoarding makes for good television. As to actual treatment I haven't treated hoarding yet so no comment.

The psychologists on the program have seemed solid to me. Good insightful work interperosnal work, as well as exposure principles and ritual prevention maintenance.

Yeah, of all the portrayals of psychologists in the media, Hoarders is the best I've seen. I respect Dr. Tolin's clinical approach and his research.

Agreed. They do good work. As far as the ethics go, the people surely give consent for televising their treatment.. and these people certainly aren't the first to have their therapy broadcasted to the public.

Here's a fun walk through history with Fritz Perls treating "Gloria" in 1965 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6dqOy2eojk

I have mixed feelings about the show. The drama is amusing but I dislike seeing entire families held hostage by their pathology. Also, DGF is always yelling "Why doesn't someone just throw all that crap away and clean the effing house?!" at the television. Anyone can imagine that being a little distracting. 🙂

I enjoy the show. From a clinical perspective, it's actually pretty accurate in terms of treatment and catalyzing causes. I hate that the show always has to show the worst cases, but I'm pretty sure they do that for the ratings. Other than that, I think it's a pretty good show.
